On June 14th I was again out walking near Simuna hoping to meet some interesting wild animal. The weather was very pleasant this time. The sun was shining and there was a minimum of clouds in the sky. Before sunset however I did not succeed in seeing anyone interesting besides different birds.

After sunset I started to walk slowly towards home. I glanced at the ditches where beavers usually are busy. If I saw correctly a beaver was even in action underwater but it did not think of sticking out its head even once. I did not watch out for it for long but decided to move on. My hands started to get a little cold too. Mist had started to rise from the water in the ditches.

While walking I looked towards the forest and suddenly I noticed a large animal. It was motionless and gazed exactly towards me. I grabbed my binoculars and a check made it clear that I had to do with an elk cow. I put the binoculars away hurriedly and crouched down. I kept quite calm and tried to move as little as possible.

At one point the elk cow started to move towards the forest and it was followed by an elk calf. I had not noticed the calf to start with, It had been in the high grass all the time. This was the first time that I could look eye to eye with an elk at Simuna.
