Osprey        Kalakotkas        Pandion haliaetus

The webcam season has ended. The sunshine is no longer able to feed the camera devices that work day and night. The nest is empty. We wish them a safe journey and luck in taking on the problems of life!

Where do ospreys spend the winter?

Our ospreys with transmitters have wintered in Angola and Gabon as well as in Congo, Sudan and Ethiopia or the western part of Africa.

The low point of the osprey population in Estonia was in 1985 when only five osprey pairs nested in Estonia. Today we may estimate the number of breeding pairs  at 70. For information: the young birds start breeding at an age of three years.

About the migration and passing migration of ospreys:

We never see ospreys in flocks even on migration since they migrate individually. The passing migrants come from Finland where almost 1 200 breeding pairs nested and the migration peak has arrived, lasting until September 20 (as observation sites Põõsaspea, Lao nina and Sõrve säär may be mentioned). Meeting solitary ospreys far in autumn or even in the first half of November is no surprise:

Our thanks to the Eagle Club (Kotkaklubi) and the LK forum for reporting all the events! Of course also the camera viewers, and hopefully we will meet again in April next year.
