Last weekend, on January 25 – 27, during the tenth winter garden bird survey more than 55 000 birds from at least 60 species were seen.

By Monday morning 2200 bird fans had forwarded their data to the Ornithological Society and garden bird observations were made  in 1500 places throughout Estonia. The most numerous species was once again the great tit that made up almost one third of the total number of observed birds. Similarly as in previous years the tree sparrow, greenfinch, bullfinch and blue tit also were among the leading quintet.

"The results of the survey were influenced by the frost during the weekend which made the need of the extra food offered at the food tables very great,” the coordinator of the winter garden bird survey, Aarne Tuule, said. "On average 38 birds were noted at an observation site, it is ten times more than a year ago in thaw weather.

The most interesting species were the robin, wren and grey shrike. For the first time in ten years the rare winter visitor pygmy owl was noted."

The Ornithological Society waits for observation results until February 4th.

The data can be entered in the form on the web page: https://eoy.ee/talv/vaatlused

or sent by regular mail (Eesti Ornitoloogiaühing, Veski 4, 51005 Tartu linn, TartuCounty).

We also look forward to data from the observation sites where no birds were seen during the observation hour.

The final summary of the winter garden bird survey will be published in February on the website of the Estonian Ornithological Society.

The Ornithological Society thanks all who took part in the garden bird survey!
