Thickets of familiar aquatic plant

Mallard swimming among pondweed
Broad-leaved pondweed Ujuv penikeel
A very common plant in our water bodies, undemanding, growing in great stands, and easily recognisable. The plant is attached to the bottom of the waters with a much branching, creeping rhizome from which numerous stems grow up to the surface, covering it with floating leaves. Such thickets favour the overgrowing of waters, but they are also areas for foraging and hiding for many aquatic animals, fish, frog spawn ...

Weeding out pondweed has only a temporary effect since the rhizome remains in the bottom of the water body.
