The comma is a woodland butterfly

Comma butterfly.

 Comma Väike-kärbtiib

The comma is mostly a woodland species, near human settlements it isn’t always seen. The brown-spotted, brightly rust-coloured wings of the butterfly have jagged edges and on the dark underside there is a c-shaped white marking from which comes the Latin name that seems odd at first.
The behaviour of the male butterflies is moderately aggressive – a territory is upheld, other butterflies except female commas are scared off.

The butterflies hatched at the end of July and fly until the arrival of frosts. They hibernate in debris or in moss.
