Grey seals in autumn

Grey seal
The grey seal is the largest mammal in the Baltic, with a life style adapted to open seas. They gather again in the rookeries as autumn arrives. Keeping up social contacts is a quite loud-voiced business. With age the voice becomes rougher. The males have a darker-coloured fur coat than for the females. Old males may be more than two metres in length and weigh up to three hundred kilos. The females are smaller.

A boar chewed off the cables of the grey seal monitoring camera this spring in a fit of boredom. In the next few weeks Ivar Jussi will probably have a chance to survey the situation and to replace the camera and power feed cables again. We will let you know when the monitoring camera gets in working order again.
