Water drop on lime tree
Deciduous trees were preparing for winter already in summer – when the elongation  of shoots finished, lignification started, and flower and leaf buds developed. In the temperate zones the greater part of plants with woody stalks shed the leaves that are needed in summer for photosynthesis and develop their cold hardiness  as days get colder. For the deep dormancy phase winter weather is needed.

When branches brought indoors do not develop leaves the above-mentioned dormancy phase has probably not occurred; this phase protects deciduous trees from developing leaves in mild winter weather. An arresting sight may mean the plant’s death.
