Many plants grow at their northerly limit in Estonia, but the dwarf cornel, growing at its southern border instead, occurs only on the North Estonian islands and coasts and on Hiiumaa.
It is an evergreen arctic ground-covering plant with low, arching branches that easily root in the soil. We can find it on the seashore where it gets a sufficiently fresh soil and sun, but it also grows in semishadow.
The dwarf cornel is eyecatching with its red berries, it is difficult to pass by without noticing it. Unknown red and alluring fruits should cause some wariness about being poisonous. But these are not, the taste is simply impossibly flat and insipid, so they are inedible.
