Its second generation of imagos, hatched this summer, are in flight; the early spring “heralds of a motley summer“wintered as imagos. The tortoiseshells, together with the peacocks, are usually the ones that manage to find a way into buildings somehow for wintering.
The base colour of the upper side of the wings is orange, with black, yellow and dark brown flecks. The wing edges are patterned with blue dots. The undersides of the wings are dark brown; with the dark yellow pattern it makes a very good protective colouring that blends in with the surroundings. They fly even in September if only the weather holds, and they are not shy of open landscapes.
