In the country the barn swallow has always had a symbolic significance – the herald of warm days; in cold weather the life of insect eaters is difficult.
Its back shimmers in blue-black, as does the band on the breast at the crop. The forehead and throat are brick red. The underparts are cream-coloured. The outer tail feathers of male birds are longer than those of female birds, convenient to observe when they are busy in pairs.
