One of the most common and beautiful representatives of the forget-me-nots, the water forget-me-not, has opened its summer sky blue eyes. Younger flowers are pink-tinged and have not yet opened. In many languages the plant has names meaning "forget-me-not“ or “remember me“ as in Estonian, although the names are also used for the wood and the field forget-me-not. But the water forget-me-not should really be the true “remember me“ flower. Its older Estonian name, lõosilm, lark’s eye, points to the similarity of the flower with a bird’s eye.
Of the larger-flowered forget-me-nots the wood forget-me-not and the field forget-me-not – with somewhat smaller „eyes“ flower at the same time as the water forget-me-not.
The water forget-me-not is a perennial, growing in damp or wet locations, such as for instance marsh edges. Its size is quite variable, reaching to more than half a metre in suitable habitats.
