The white admiral is slightly smaller than the poplar admiral but quite similar. They too are forest butterflies whose fast flight catches the eye and they are very observant of dangers. But when feeding on plant flowers the caution of the individual disappears, and then an observer has a chance unless he makes a sudden move ...

The top sides of the wings are less colourful than those of the poplar admiral: the blackish brown base colour is garnished only with white flecks with marked boundary lines. The white pattern on the orange-tinted undersides of the wings mirrors the white flecks of the upper side somewhat more broadly.

Both species are quite common in Estonia.
