Birder’s diary - 9.10

As it happened no-one had photographed the hero of the day – the brambling – so once more a photo of the day’s rarity – the crested lark – who appeared again after several days, and this time with a quite dirty beak. (09.10.2012)

At Sõrve säär the weather during the whole day was rainy (there was thunder too) and at intervals quite windy too. In the morning rain splashed down hard and going out was not attractive. But when we finally got out a strong migration was already on. Finches and thrushes went by hundreds and thousands. Among the finches the large number of bramblings was notable; at the end of the day 102 500 individuals had gone down in the notebook. It should be the all-time best day number of bramblings in Estonia. Chaffinches were already fewer, 51 300 individuals got noted. Among thrushes the most numerous of the day was the mistle thrush, of whom we managed to count 905 individuals. This too is one of the highest day totals that has been counted in Estonia. Because of the frequent showers we lazed about quite a lot. If we had had the energy for serious watching the numbers would obviously have been considerably larger. Of late leavers we found today a grasshopper warbler (an all-time latest observation in Estonia), 2 redstarts, a spotted flycatcher and an osprey. The crested lark that had been missing for several days showed itself again in the old place near the lighthouse. During the day we saw altogether 90 bird species at Sõrve säär. Events at Sõrve säär are described in more detail in the Sõrve bird station diary.
