Four owlets in nest ...

Klaara arrives with prey to nest

Tawny owl      Kodukakk     Strix aluco

The two bigger owlets have reached an age of 10 days, the third in size is only one day younger. The smallest one hatched three days later and is visibly ”half the size” of its siblings.

The loudest and most active of the owlets are fed by the female – this is simply how their life is arranged. With the start of the frog migration we see quite often that amphibians are brought to the nest: they move towards the spawning waters at night too, and are clumsier in the lower night temperature, thus easy prey for the owls.

The webcam shows that Klaara has enough duties during daylight too. In early morning Klaus brings some prey to the nest, during the day the owlets need feeding at least four times. The room needs tidying when a large family lives on a few tens of square centimetres…
