A Spotless Sun

Sun spots. This photo is from the Observatory of Tartu’s webpage, it is taken with a SOHO satellite.

For many days now, people have been able to observe a sun that has no spots. May there be a new record? To a new record to be made, the sun must stay spotless for a few months more. The sight itself is very beautiful, while as the scientists have a lot of guessing to do. Calm periods on the sun are very common – if they don’t go on for too long.

Sun spots are spots that are a thousand degrees cooler than the sun itself and they appear because of its magnetic field. The activity of our sun is judged with these spots, depending on how many there are and how much they appear.
