Changeable autumn weather

The rain that had surrounded us like a leaden grey sheet stopped as suddenly as it had begun. A wind rose, the expanse of cloud sailed quickly away in the sky, and there were already glints of sun, low on the horizon, in the pine copse. Still watery, but it looked like at least half an hour to the next shower. The birds who had scattered into shelter during the downpour appeared again: a group of skylarks, a nice flock of chaffinches, yellowhammers and fieldfares. There were more and more of the fieldfares, coming in from the alders. From the village a low-flying sparrowhawk approached; of the birds here, it only managed to catch the tail end of a daring wagtail. A buzzard rose up over the open fields, coming from a group of spruces, and from the east a line of geese appeared. Over the Jõgisoo fields the line order got confused, and the calls became louder. Some 150 bean geese seemed to want to land, but changed their mind and steered towards the fields of Aila village – obviously looking for a suitable feeding place. And then suddenly there was heavy rain again and the birds disappeared.

Autumn's brighter part seems to be at an end, and the period when moments of nice weather have to be used quickly is with us instead. And creatures in nature do just that. Migrating birds particularly, because for them a long journey is near or has already begun. At a migration pause it is vitally important to fill up one’s stores of fat, and so  have renewed energy for flying on.

The weather signs show that for the cranes it will soon become urgent to leave Harjumaa.

Waiting for the geese, Ülemiste lake.
