Leaves: half gone, half still there

Horse chestnut in autumn.

Birches, maples and ashes are nearly ready for their winter rest period, all leaves are gone. On some kinds of trees, such as limes, leaves remain here and there. But chestnuts and oaks still have their full leaf coat on in places.
Still, the great time for picking up leaves is past; besides maples, birches and maybe limes – because they are the most colourful – we aren’t much tempted to pick up others, except maybe sometimes rowans.
Oak and chestnut leaves mostly turn brown, or flecked in brown and green. But look how enormous the leaves of ashes (the last ones can be found on the ground) and chestnuts grow in late autumn, just like the leaves of some tropical plant. Now is just the right time to admire them
