Disturbance at the nest

Monday was 12 degrees at night with daytime temperatures over 20 degrees. The winds kept up their strength: 20 meters per second. The strong winds brought with them some real disturbances. Somebody or something disturbed the chicks repeatedly the entire day. We don't know what might have caused so much alarm and concern to the chicks.
The attached picture is one example of how the chicks directed their attention trunkdward toward the disturbance. In this instance, the disturbance lasted more than a half hour. The disturbance cannot have come from the ground and is likely close by…
