Maybe the prettiest and most colourful of birds in our corner of the world. Once they were treasured as cage birds in Europe, when keeping these still was fashionable.
Plenty of vagrant groups have been seen lately; they really attract attention with their colourful apparition.
Let’s have a look at this abundance of colours: the head is red-black-white, the eyes have a black mask. The back is a lighter brown, wings black with mustard yellow, the vent area white. Tail feathers black with white tips. The female and male are quite similar.

As in the nesting period, we meet them near broadleaf trees. They feed on the seeds of mugwort (Artemisia) stands that show up above the snow, or on other higher weeds.
