Goldcrests are here

Goldcrest

  Goldcrest Pöialpoiss  Regulus regulus

This is what they are like, the smallest songbirds in Europe: body length less than 10 centimetres, weight just a shade over 5 grams. On top of that beautiful and trusting of people. Busily in action, moving quickly in the crowns of conifers, in the migration period they can appear almost anywhere. The voice of this tiny bird is thread-thin, audible only to a trained ear; older people often cannot hear the high-pitched sound, however close the author of the sound may be.
The band on the top of the female bird’s head is yellow, the male bird’s reddish-yellow. The back is grey-green, the tail short with a small notch. The plumage of the underparts is grey-white.

The recent winter season was very hard on the birds who wintered here, but luckily goldcrests were noted in the bird count one week ago. The population nesting here in summer should be more than a quarter of a million birds.
