A quandary

Pied flycatcher Must - kärbsenäpp  Ficedula hypoleuca
Side by side with the old nesting box, unused for many years, a shining new one went up this year. It is home-built, very precisely according to the guidelines for building a nest box, mostly thinking of blue tits. The initial interest however was quite lukewarm. A tree sparrow pair and a solitary starling studied both boxes and looked somewhat disappointed. Blue tits were there too, but that the guidelines had been fulfilled obviously didn’t interest them, and they too left. But one morning an endless trilling sounded from the yard. The pied flycatcher whose late arrival here can cause problems with finding nesting space, sang victoriously from a branch stretching between the two free living spaces.
But the chance to choose can make new problems. Which nesting box to choose – the new one that is sturdier and safer? Or the old one that probably looks more pleasantly coloured for a bird?

Or leave the whole decision-making to the beloved one who is still to arrive?
