The first performance of the new nature film will be in the Artis cinema (Solaris Centre, Estonia pst 9, entrance from Rävala puiestee) on Thursday, May 20, 2010, at 6.30 pm. The film runs every day until May 27.

Folk beliefs held that plants with powers can cure many illnesses. This film focuses on plants that people have used since ancient times to cure their bodily and spiritual woes. Among them are both tree giants towering toward the sky as well as minute little plantlets. We search for them everywhere: in sunny meadows, on bare beaches, in our home gardens, in the expanses of swamps and bogs open to the sky and in the shadows of primeval forests. Our journey is guided by Dr. Ain Raal, Associate Professor of Pharmacognosy of the University of Tartu.

Thirty plants native to Estonia have been chosen for the film, spanning from those known from the beginnings of time to healing plants well known and used today. It is a journey into a familiar, yet unknown nature. The film does not teach how to use medicinal herbs. There are enough knowledgeable and easily available handbooks for that. Our film presents the plants in their natural environments, and in the important stages of their life: when buds and flowers appear, a fruit embryo is formed, the fruit ripens. Thus the film will be a living plant identifier. The film introduces the interactions between the plant kingdom and other forms of life and helps us to understand the effects of this interaction and interdependence on the existence of life as a whole.
With this film we hope to rouse the curiosity of the viewers, and to encourage all to go on their own discovery journeys in the miraculous world of plants, to find a way back to beginnings, to forgotten origins, to ourselves.
