I have been in wild Sweden but have never seen Capercaillie in the wild and probably never will see, so I am very glad with this cam as the next best thing.

Two nice recordings of a male Capercaillie by Hans Ondraczek from Germany.
Read the comments of the recordist

At the moment on the cam only the sound of one, but the operator is searching.

In the old days we used a recording of Capercaillie in courses on bird sound. The burps and pops were always a great success.

Though male Capercaillie is a big and robust bird, its voice is not so loud as we can imagine. In common situation it is possible to hear up to 150m, sometimes not more as 100m. Nothing to compare to Raven or Black Woodpecker, if to choose couple of other black species, but smaller ones.
Fortunately, our microphone is about 2m from the ground. And hope such mad males as recorded by Hans Ondraczek in Germany will not appear in lek. There is an opinion, that males get crazy because of destroyed lekking site (cutting for example) and it should not to be a case in our lek - it is protected. Though impact of forest drainage play a long term destructive role also here - you see too quickly growing pines around. These places are former bogs, but by now after tens of years since ditching there is young forest, too much tight stands for big bird. Fortunately higher places with sand ground are turning in years more suitable if not managed and some diversity of stands has left still around.

Yeah, could also be some overflow of hormons, exitment. Guess most have seen this video when two males are fighting, a golden eagle comes in and kills one of them but the other dont get scared and fly away but attacks the eagle! ...and also easily gets killed by the eagle: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWnsyR7nIM0

We had an angry one at work that smashed a lantern of a buddys car and we took shelter in my car but still he was pecking on the rear window trying to get in :rotf:

As a part of "the Bird of the Year - Capercaillie" we're collecting observations for mad capercaillie in Estonia. So far over 100 contacts have been reported (mostly from 2016 and 2017). https://www.eoy.ee/metsis/osale/?c=vaatlused

Around 06:05 I heard the first Capercaille of the day. A couple of minutes later the camera began to move.

I wonder
- Can the camera turn 360°?
- Does the microphone turn with the camera?
