09:35:53 - - 36:00 Call
09:38 A crow approaches, calling, lands in the tree.
09:39:26 Crow calls
09:39:27 (!) - 32 Goshawk calls, moves away

This new tone concerns me very much today. :puzzled:
It is used a lot - today for the first time that I hear it. Is it fear or a warning call?

09:40:17 - 21 Goshawk and Crow start calling at the same time
09:43:43 - 51 Goshawk /Crow
09:45:46 - 51 too

09:44:52 Crow

10:20:54 - 58 The Goshawk calls and approaches, lands in the tree and continues calling until 21:05

10:21:41 - 48 Crow / Goshawk came too close in the tree? Both protest.

10:21:51 A crow (always the same?) Lands on the side branch, later jumps onto the upper branch and then sits behind the trunk.
10:25 Either she feels safe or she feels provoked.

Image

Image

The crow and goshawk are both sitting in the tree ... they need to know and may even be able to see each other.

I don't know what's going on here today and what it's going to lead to. I just hope it's over soon.

10:25:52 The crow leaves the branch.
Now the Goshawk is also released from its position in the tree.

Image

He must have been sitting below the crow.
Both fly out. The crow just flies a bow and comes back. :slap: :banghead:

There are again several crows present. They shout and their clapping of wings can be heard.

10:30:01 - 10 Goshawk calls out loud
Quieter tones follow
10: 30: 41-31:00 the Goshawk moves away with softer tones
10:31:27 - 36 calls can be heard, distant
I hardly dare to think that it sounded like mating noises.

10:32:02 'Gjak' approaches the tree
Now a crow appears to be leaving the tree.

10:32:03 H44 flutters into the nest!
Nice to see him. :innocent:

Image

He looks at his nest, plucks his feathers and jumps onto the upper branch.
There he retracts his foot, maybe would like to sit quietly but ...
.... 10:33:20 - 26 calls from his female from afar.
H44 jumps back into the nest, calls softly and benevolently.

His harvest isn't quite as plump today. 8-)
Image

H44 pays attention for a moment. A bird flies past on the right. I couldn't tell which one it was.

10:34:46 H21 starts making a begging call.
10:34:52 he leaves the nest
Mating until 35:19

10:36:00 - 05 Call

I'm off to work.

From a distance
10:46:35 Then begging call continues until '43

H21 will now use this call sequence several times. Heard in the video.

10:46:44 A 'Gjak' sounds near the nest and H44 lands '48 in the nest.
He calls briefly, looks ... waiting?
10:47:39, '40 begging calls then continue to '48
H44 jumps on the side branch, high up. :innocent:
Meanwhile, H21 continues to call from afar
10:48:17/18 begging call
10:49:37 Begging call continues until '45
10:50:30 - 38 too

H44 can no longer be held and leaves branch '39.

Both can be heard several times away.

But now.

Today if there is a lot of activity, the possible laying dates are approaching and it has to be noticed.

Those different tones that you comment are derived from one of his previous calls to ki-ki-ki, but wider and more melodious. I think it is approaching what I already said was more elongated. It may be repeated in the next few dates.

This looks good even if they are very young.

Hello Emiliano! Thank you for your help and your thoughts. :innocent:

For me, egg-laying would be a sensation at this point in time.
In my opinion, there is not enough H21 in the nest. And when it is there, it is often passive. Actually, they are generally very (too) irregular in the nest. On some days you don't even hear them off-road or only rarely. In my imagination it is unthinkable that H21 lays eggs in a nest in which she was hardly present or actively participated. Or? :puzzled:
But it's goshawk. I don't know about goshawks. It is actually the first couple that I observe from the start. I don't know anything about pairing or their behavior during courtship and breeding season.
It is possible that they are not so shaped for intensive nest care and pronounced rituals in the nest area. Their chicks also grow up very quickly ... everything goes quickly and and noticeably with the Goshawks. They are inconspicuous.
It may be the basis for their survival.

I have now added the missing videos and continue with the day.

12:51:48 H21 flies to the nest in an inclined position and lands very sleekly.
I was déjà vu. Boka has often accomplished the feat too.

First she calls, then she calms down. Suggests nest work but actually she just stands and looks. Every now and then she communicates with H44.
13:21:38 H44 brings a larger branch into the nest.

Image

While he is sorting sticks in flighty habit, H21 chirps to him dearly. :innocent:

H44 looks dainty next to her.
(Here you can also see the different drawing 'V' of both tail feathers. Emiliano, good eye for detail!)

Image

Image

Both harvests are well stocked. H44 also seems to have eaten well by now.
Both are beautiful goshawks. :innocent:

13:50 Now only the tail feather of H44 can be seen. He is sitting high up on the upper branch. H21 keeps looking up at him.
13:52:02 H44 flies away downwards.
13:52:16 H21 follows him with shouts.

The stay (around an hour) was shortened:

14:09:34 - 50 mating noises

14:11:12 H44 brings a twig into the nest, sings and jumps onto the upper branch.
There he cleans himself and does nothing else. :whistling:
14:27:11 and out

Call until 14:27:28 but I think no pairing.

16:10:07 H44 again.
He looks even thinner in the wind.

Image

Image

He climbs very high again on his favorite branch.
16:16:11 away This time straight through, not into the undergrowth.

16:29:13 H44 flutters back into the nest.
Before that, the soft tones of both H's could be heard in the area. :innocent:

He stands ... just like that.
16:30:59 He flies out quickly and the goal was soon clear - mating noises until 16:31:12. :whistling:

16:32:02 and back in the nest.

H44 is really stressed. :D
He finds some rest on his upper branch.
16:33:49 He leaves the nest in the direction of the industrial area.

I heard the last calls at 20:47:40 - 46
21: 07: 28/29, 30/31

Sleep well! :innocent:

The possibilities of this camera with its panorama are excellent and allow to know and study many aspects of reproduction.

I spend a lot of time in the field in goshawk territories and I see loose things here and there that I have to interpret later. Here it is easier.

The heat is not continuous in the surroundings of the nest, only at the end they "put the direct" and make life near it.

Nobody has taught them, they carry it in their genes, although learning counts for a lot and they go through stages.

At the moment the pair is already formed, they are tolerated, there is heat, matings (there are usually between five and ten a day), contribution of sticks by the male mainly. It will be necessary to see if they lay eggs, if they are viable and if the male will feed.

We have Margo's experience with young people, several years, with different results.

There is a lot of information and videos in the two forums that can be analyzed with peace of mind and time.

The behavior in courtship is what we are seeing, there is much that cannot be seen but it is quite what is observed.

Imants Jakovlev cites cases of young people who have raised up to four chickens, although this is not normal. I would settle for there being chickens, better one or two so that there would be a better chance of raising them.

In Riga they will not be very discreet when in its 307 km2 and surroundings there are many couples, with a higher density than usual as in other places.

This urban phenomenon has been occurring for more or less 20 or 30 years.

At the moment we owe a lot to you (POLLY) and to others, since you have been keeping an activity diary for many months when it was not as profitable as it is now.

THANKS and GREETINGS to all those who collaborate and make it possible:

The Forum Societies, the naturalists, the technicians who maintain it and those who are there documenting what is seen and heard.

April 17th

Thanks for your words Emiliano! :innocent:
You may be right - our H's are really pacing today. The visits can hardly be documented today. :dunno:

The visits so far:

06:03:29 - 59
H44 brings a branch Mating after leaving the nest

06:12:15 - 13:14
H44 ... no branch

06:19:09 - 20:23
H44 brings a large branch, tests the nest hole. H21 calls while he is busy building

06: 22: 41-23:13
H44 brings a branch, is called by H21 with soft tones.
"Throw your heart across the river and swim after it."

06:31:32 - 07:00:04
H21 flies into the tree from below ... H21 is a break pilot.
She lingers on the lower floor for a while before she gets into the nest. Loud, of course.
06:52:34 H44 now also comes into the nest.
They chirp at each other, tenderly touching their beaks. :loveshower:
06:53:38 H44 out

It seems that the H21 is interested in the camera
Image

06:55:13 H44 in
He brings a big branch. Before that, the breaking of branches could be heard in the area. H21 responded to that too. 06:55:59 H44 leaves the nest
07:00:04 Now also H21
Calls can be heard

07:44: -?
Between the last and this visit there were many calls in the area.
07:44:30 'crack'
07:44:41 H 44 brings a branch, carefully places it. He jumps onto the upper branch.
H21 calls again and again in different tones.
07:46:18 H21 stumbles ... falls into the nest.
She sorts branches in the nest ... it's nice to see. H21 likes to look up at H44.
In 48:40 - 49:00 she is very attentive towards the industrial area.
07:49:13 Oops ... H44 falls down. He leaves the branch in the dive.
08:02:47 H44 back, both greet each other with shouts.
08:03:57 H44 out.
08:24:40 H21 cleans herself up extensively, she sits :innocent:
08:29:00 H44 comes back - with a giant branch. He's pretty adept at it, although it looks messy at times.
Soon he gives up and jumps onto the side branch. So both sit ... H21 in the nest, H44 on the side branch.
08:38:52 H44 leaves the branch

....H21 remains

So far it seems that H21 will stay in the nest today? :innocent:

09: 41/42 H21 the nest is designed to be comfortable. She realigns some branches.

09:54
Image

10:02:14 H44 is calling from the area. H21 gets up, answers him.
10:07:29 H44 can be seen in flight in the undergrowth.
H21 again sorts some branches and sits down again.
10:29:40 A chainsaw is started. H21 gets nervous, gets up ... calls. After a few moments, she relaxes again.

Their feathers are erect. Very good. :innocent:
Image

10:53:22 H21 lies down again.

I realize that H21 won't leave the nest anymore. :innocent:

11:10 H21 starts to slide. The contractions are clearly visible. She is still standing in the nest.
11:11:08 Well, very clearly.
11:11:44 H21 pushes hard. But still stands.
Image

11:12:27 H21 is looking for a better, more comfortable position and it was close ...

11:12:43 The incredible first egg is born! :loveshower: :bounce: :loveshower:

11:36:54 H21 starts to call gently ... H44 is on the way to the nest.
He also announces himself gently. :innocent:

H44 stops on the edge of the nest.
Image

H21 stands up .... shows him the egg. Both speak to each other.
He lovingly tugs at her tail feathers. :2thumbsup:

:D

11:38:40 H44 leaves the nest.
