Re: Goshawk nest in Riga 2020 - 2021

Post by Emi7 »

I have noticed the nape, eyebrows, pileo and the size of the legs. In addition, the position of the rings may differ somewhat (according to the photos that were recently ringed). Being away from the camera we can make mistakes, which already happened to us with chickens. Some of the data may have changed with the move but now we already have enough references of this individual for future visits.

In general the males are somewhat darker and so are the cheeks (behind the eyes and under the eyebrow).

With the program that I have, I record the screen but I have not yet tried to take the image, although I doubt that it improves the live and effectively the numbering is not clear.

This Goshawk was in the nest on the same day as H44. (March 22.)
I don't want to take the magic of H44 - this boy is one of a kind! But its sound is not unmistakable. The adult goshawk does not wear a ring.

I just want to make a suggestion ... A thought that came up suddenly.
That adult could have been Boka. My first thought was because of the powerful voice - a female.

Then I started looking out of a memory.

Our Latvian observers have a great, well-run and tidy site.
There I found a picture of Boka. Faster than in my chaos. Thanks! :innocent:

That's it, isn't it?

That would mean that not both are dead (probably) as claimed / suspected. Unfortunately, 'only' Lujis seems to have had an accident, robbed or otherwise died.

It would go as far as possible, although with one more change we cannot say that it is Boka, the pattern on the neck is not exactly the same but it is not the same year. She certainly does seem like a powerful female.

September 20th

:hi:

Overall a relaxed day.
In the morning shouts in the distance.
06: 35/36 morning briefing

07:42 Sound like both H's ... now a little closer and gentle :innocent:

07:53, 08: 13/16 short, nice sounds

In the afternoon our H's had another visit to the territory. Juvenile or female ... I think juvenile. Fine thin voice.
15:33 The visitor was asked to leave. I suspected H44 but unsure.

For about another 10 minutes the warning calls (both?) H's and the voice of the visitor can be heard.

15:35 - 39 The position near or even in the nest tree is held.

Compared to the last time, the situation was settled quickly.

15:44 The last word belongs to one of our H's - still present near the nest.

From Imants Jakovļevs »Sep 20 2021 22:32 in Dabasdati forum

https://forums.dabasdati.lv/viewtopic.p ... start=1280
I also believe that these two hawks are the hosts of the nest: Hilda and Harry.
When summer occurs in Latvian nature - in autumn the bright sun shines, then the campers (chicken hawks, grouse, etc.) have a "false routine" - singing to their territories.
I think Hari will still be in the nest on warm October days.
Glad to confirm that the Goshawks are also going through a fall heat. I had no references to it so it is already a proven fact in this city where you study and work with the Goshawks. It seemed strange to me that at this time they were with their white feathers from under their tails unfolded.

Thank you Mr. Imants, we continue to expand knowledge.

Although not the same, he reminds me that there are many wild herbaceous plants and some shrubs that this time of year are blooming again.

As Polly documents so thoroughly they are still there and we begin to understand the causes of their calls and movements.

I want to review 2016/2017 to Margo in case there is already something of this in the months of August-September, since she raised both years.

Regards and good night.

I'm a little reassured that my instincts seem to be working a little. Since I absolutely could not recognize the ring as H44 ... (I tried until late yesterday evening to be sure - again and again) ... to read Imants Jakovlevs' assessment well.

Here in Schleswig Holstein we also have cold April weather and our birds are turning up - titmice, chiffchaff.

The crows return from the fields to the village. The background noise is enormous.

Yesterday starlings gathered in the oak in front of our terrace ... wow. That moment ... after many minutes of noise there is suddenly silence ... and 2 seconds later this swarm comes out of the tree!
I've always wondered - there has to be an announcer. Similar to a conductor.

Well, today I could only change my diaper again. Nothing special since noon.

In the morning around 7:00 am, unexcited briefing.

Call now from 18:00 H21
....
18:14 can still be heard.
H44 seems absent.

H21 does not get an answer

I'm considering taking some kind of winter break. My working hours are also a disaster at the moment ... read more very relaxed. I have tons of unread books. But I probably won't be able to make it through.

September 24th

Yesterday there were 7:25 - 11: 57/58 again and again somewhat excited calls in the area.
Probably H44
12:02, 06/06, 13-15 I heard both H's

Today: Not sure: 08: 08/08 Calls from a juvenile in the distance?
The voice sounded bright.

08:20 excited adult call
08:25:04 - 10 adult call at a distance
08:25:12 - 16 The nest tree answers. H44? I didn't see it fly in.
08:26:26 a gentle short sound from a distance
08:26:31 The goshawk leaves the tree

09:03:36 Another H's flies into the tree ... silently.

09: 04: 14/15 Now he calls out briefly and jumps onto the upper branch.
He stays there for the time being ... relaxed and calm, he loosens his feathers. :innocent:

Image

09:11:50 Like a ghost, he leaves again silently the tree.

09:19 now calls more distant

09:22:40 Two voices now closer - one of our H and Jay / Woodpecker (?)

09: 53/54 Nervous calls in the area
10:00:00 A youthful call can be heard for brief moments. It sounds strange ... it's not far, but it sounds soft, like suffocated.
I'm considering the jay imitating.

Crows are currently on tour and I think Jay (10:18 - 20) again. It drives me crazy. :rotf:

Yeah, it was the Jay! :D
Listen to 10:25:29 - 35. He imitates the begging call (youthful call) just before he leaves the nest.

Then his croak can be heard again in the undergrowth.

Emiliano, thanks for the September 23 addition.

I no longer document very seamlessly.
I am following the transmission but only document sightings, special moments or moments in which our Goshawk are actually in the tree without being seen.
The interest is low anyway and every effort pushes me to the limit in terms of time and strength at the moment. So it will have to be enough.

But you are very welcome to bring in any character here !!! :2thumbsup:

If the camera continues, I will not report in more detail until the beginning of the next season.

We will feel it when the time comes. :innocent:

Records on September 24th such as the imitation of Jay's youth call and the first visit to the tree (invisible) as well as the second visible visit so now chronologically before September 23rd.

Unfortunately I don't know how to technically link to the 24th.

Have a nice, sunny Sunday to Spain and @all!

Ps: It has become very quiet. Hear H44 (at all times of the day ... sometimes excited, sometimes tempting)but I miss our H21 a bit.

By the way ...

Incidentally, I don't like that our observations are taken over but deleted or ignored in the chat.
As last from Verotja.

I imagine working together differently.

For months I have had the feeling that our efforts and time are being misused and that they count less.

My job is currently enough for me ... I don't need this mentality in my free time.

Two days a week I listen in the early hours of dawn for about half an hour to detect if they are still there during the fall period.

This week :

September 27th

7:02:57 - 00
7:03:22 - 27
7:17:51
7:18:03
7: 27.48 - 50

September 30th

6:51:48 - 54
6:56:55 to 7:00:34 Two individuals.
7:10:46 to 7:36:25 More spread over time.

After a first "good morning" call, they usually follow a few minutes later more calls grouped with answers and then they are distributed, they use the ki -ki, gjack and another as an elongated ki type of anger, but not much)

Greetings

Hey Emiliano,

our H's are still there.
I still follow the camera very closely whenever I can.

It's getting quieter ... sometimes you can't hear the Goshawk for hours.

But they also have very intense moments where they can suddenly be heard close up. Our H's are more often present than we think. :innocent:
(I will only document very precisely again as the number of sightings increases.)

Even now, both can be heard sporadically ... for a few minutes and from different distances.

I hope all H's get through the winter safely and nothing happens to them.

It will be long months.
Even if it seems very deserted for a few days - I am definitely counting on increasing activities from November onwards. It remains to be seen how hard the winter will be.

Best regards

Ps: I think the voices of H44 and H21 are alike. There are few happy moments in which they can be clearly distinguished. I have had difficulty naming them accurately.

I also believe that H21 is starting to use more shorts, similar to the 'gjak'. :puzzled:

I am a little confused and insecure.
It will help if both can be seen regularly again and we can also see the calling.

I am missing practice.

Sometimes I have distinguished the male and female by their voices but the type of calls and their tone also change. When they were in the nest it was easier. Everything we assigned lately to H44 is also from H21. The same thing happens with the white eyebrow, it is not fixed, there are males with a more extensive eyebrow than other females although in a general way it is usually the other way around.

From what I read, the hawk is still considered sullen and quiet but here we are seeing that it is not so. I recognize the great advantage of the camera (you are not in their environment physically and if they see or feel you they can change their behavior). If they are in a place , in those first moments of the morning, their presence is usually fixed in sounds. We will see how they evolve until December and we can see what we expected with Boka and Luijs.

Greetings and to rest that your work in documenting is remarkable
and you need to relax.

Greetings

October 1st

Today we have crow cinema again. Very present and very annoying. Our H's are not amused.

11:48 - 11:55 You can hear H44 very well. I didn't see him, but he's sitting pretty close and somewhere gives his 'gjak' from time to time.
(Also 12:01:11)

Have a good time!

October 2nd

:hi: @all

So that we stay in training  ... Emiliano ... what do you think?
H44 or H21? :shake:

09:27:21 - 26 A nice clear call from 'nowhere'.
Again I did not see the Goshawk arrive but it is sitting close.
09:33:32 approximately
The goshawk leaves the tree

Both cut:

Sounds demanding to me.
Angry no because no further excitement can be seen or heard.
Still not relaxed. I think this is where one partner demands the other's attention.
