06:52:25 a long tone, like a whistle. I heard him for the third time today.

A minute later ...
06:53:31 Two goshawk can be seen. One of them flutters from below onto the yellow mast (pixel area). Another one, also from a low position, flies into the left group of trees.

06: 53: 31/32 "Gjak" :innocent:

06:53:50 The goshawk on the mast flies downwards.

06:54:09 A crash in the nest tree. Landing noise. Usually H21. 8-)
Shortly afterwards, a Goshawk brushes against the tree at nest level, but flies into the group of trees on the left.

06:54:35 Departure - not to be missed. The second goshawk also leaves the tree in the left side.

07:16:10 - 17 call

08:49:05 "Gjak"
08:49:35 - 42 Both H's can be heard with soft short sounds :innocent:
08:49:54 - 50:07
08:50:20 - 57

I am very happy to hear both again today.

Further calls:
09:05:41 - 51 Both H's with affection

09:34:40 - 45 quick call

More distant:
10:11:08 - 24
11:07:42 - 46

11:26:54 - 57, 27:07 - 13 timid, in the field

There was protest:
11:42:18 - 23
These calls had also been heard from far away. I didn't write them all down.

12:10:21 - 29 One of the H's approaches with a shout
12:12:09 - 16 Conversation with soft tones :innocent:

It continues a little more lazy until 12:14:51 :D

I'm gone for today.

Hello

In the Netherlands you cannot go back in time with the camera, I have only followed them punctually at certain key moments such as the independence of the chickens and through the chat.
The chickens flew more or less like the h's and there have not been many visits from parents or sounds.

In the years that I have been following the goshawk I had never heard the sound "gjack" and with the cameras and videos I have been able to verify that it is used by couples mainly during the breeding season.

The most typical sound of H21 is heard from time to time, the most normal is its shriek of anger if it detects you in the area and not always because they leave without making a noise like ghosts and you see silhouettes escaping. The waits are not like here that you can see them delayed with a margin of 12 hours and without altering their behavior.

We can be lucky that within the individual variations of the Goshawks the H's use these own sounds a lot and we identify them (more or less) even though they cannot be seen.

I think it has to do with the urban environment they have and the proximity of other couples and individuals but it was not observed in previous couples.

I will try to review Margo who was there for four seasons but so far nothing special has come out like these.

Greetings

Hi Emiliano :hi:

Oh, I'm insanely untalented for that. Even when I see them. :rotf:

You remember?

The visit of two Goshawks on August 30th.
There is a message from Imants Jakovslevs in the Latvian forum. I hope I translate correctly: L51, the Juvenile was ringed by him on May 28th, 2021. Probably male (although I would think Imants Jakovslevs should know). The second Goshawk, in his opinion, is likely to be male too - possibly even H44.
Let's say it was H44 ... Well, then our tender Goshawk has gained a lot.

To me this goshawk looked very powerful. Just female.
So much for that. :D

In addition: It is of course possible. On one of his last quieter visits, I noticed that H44 would also develop this 'V' in the tail feathers. (documented) That was new and seems to have happened with the moult. He also seemed to me to have become a little (!) stronger. In addition, depending on the position in front of the camera, the animals simply appear larger or smaller.
It is not easy but beautiful! :innocent:

I ask (everyone) to read and interpret the message from Imants Jakovslevs personally in the Latvian forum. I don't want to be the author of false information.

Well today ...
They don't make it easy to document. Basically, they are permanently in the field. Sometimes further away ... sometimes close to hear. In the meantime I have decided not to write down every sound anymore. I would have to constantly scroll to get exact timestamps.
No, not today.

06:13:14 - 20 call in the area
07:20:29 - 39 Smalltalk Goshawk vs. Crow
07:22:11 short call
07:23:44 - 46, 24:02 - 07, 47 - 54 the excited call flutters away

The calls continue in the distance.

09:33:23 - 35:38 (among other things)
Interesting this voice, which I now assign to a Jay. I didn't pay attention to it at first. Even if I like to perceive other birds, I usually don't pick up a pen until Goshawk.
This voice, these calls can be heard more often today.

There was that moment at 09:33:54. It briefly sounded like Goshawk
Perhaps it was also H44 that interferes well with the twittering. :whistling:
Afterwards the croaking of the Jay and crows could be heard.

Sometimes it is more difficult to recognize a sighting (which depends on your position and with respect to the camera) than sounds that have entered our senses throughout the season. H44 with his gjak (I think it is difficult for everyone to do it as repeatedly as him) and H21 the elongated sound of him, yes you can hear it but not as repeated as he does.

I think Imants Jakovlevs is one of the naturalists who gives more data and I believe and seems to be a reliable gentleman. When the birds are ringed they are still very the same depending on the order of birth
and it is not always easy to recognize male and female unless it is very clear. I have not seen data taken of measurements or weight in the ringings. Young L51's companion looks like an adult and I don't think H44 has shed its chest feathers and leg breeches so quickly.

Despite having been with the Azores for so long, I still make mistakes in my assessments and I admit it because it is not always easy. A person who visits so many nests and rings, can of course also have some confusion and will be mixed up with many sites, birds ... We may not have understood the translation. Even so I admire the work and dissemination of this naturalist, he did not ring H44 (Arnis Z. did), who despite his experience sometimes has to rely on visual appreciation data such as relative size of the legs to distinguish between males and females when young chicks are ringed.

I think the work being done in Latvia for the Goshawk is quite good and he is teaching us a lot of data that would otherwise be difficult to interpret.

Greetings and to continue enjoying this couple who continues to send us data (in the distance) despite the time and a bit late.

Greetings to all.

Up until now, goshawks have been heard regularly today. Sometimes you have to listen very intensely so as not to miss the gentle sounds.

Love is in the air ... :innocent:
11:07:42, '48, '53 a touch of 'gjak' ... then a jay (?) screeches
Movement in the branches and delicate tones follow.
11:09:30 a second goshawk can be heard further away.
11:29 still this quiet 'gjak'

Last I heard our two H's together 12:28:43 - 29:01.

I think the work being done in Latvia for the Goshawk is quite good ...
Well, I don't know the reasons why the Goshawk receives this special attention in Riga. I don't read that deep. In other words: it is more of a coincidence to come across informative and detailed reports.
It was the same with Bubo. It's hard to find out about eagle owl in Latvia. The hunt, the population ... current figures and why there are so few occurrences. Or what is being done about it. There are only general and old reports. Or I've come across terrifying and disgusting sites. (Hunting sites, hunting tourism and illegal animal trade in birds of prey)
Instead, due to failure and exhaustion of the technical resources, the camera was removed from the nest without further ado. (and the subject was locked.)
Goshawk, too, are sometimes removed from the nests as chicks and sold to falconers.

I am very happy when these birds get some attention. And grateful for any unbiased tolerance towards them.
The hatred of Goshawk has at times brought this species to critical limits of existence.

So I am grateful to all initiatives and their supporters and their commitment.

I would definitely like to see H44 in different briefs  , but it seems we have to be content with his voice.

As long as both can still be heard, I will urge myself to be patient. But it is difficult ...

There were more calls in the area
13:07:20 - 27
13:14:38 - 41
In the afternoon the camera ran but I had little concentration (visit)

19:19:27 H44 can be heard close with 'Gjak' while a second Goshawk is calling in the distance.

They have become a bit calmer again. H21 no longer emits their sounds that resemble a pairing.

.... wait a minute.

20:04:44 approximately

Both can be heard longer.

It's gotten pretty dark. Our H's seem to be still present.
20:36:38 H44 can be heard very gently again.
... 'Gjak'

...and good night together!

:hi:

Morning calls again at dusk
06:05 - 06:31

07:30 I think both H's again

08:03, 08:10
08:21 - 23 very close
We can hear fluttering noises, shout and continuation with 'Gjak'

09:01 - 04 angry, annoyed
09:08 ... more relaxed

Morning calls again at dusk ...
Is understandable, right? :slap:

Call a little further in the area:
10:02, 11:00

13:40:44 - 52 I hear angry shouts of warning.
Two goshawks? It sounds like this in a nutshell.

13:41:26 - 30 A goshawk still angry

13:42:42 - 45 ... still in action to keep the territory free of intruders.

Strange sounds that I probably take too much to heart. My first instinct was a plaintive bird.
However, there are other options - playing, screeching child or a happy whistle in the workshop.

Today is a difficult day to capture clear sounds. There is a lot of work in the hall and the wind is not strong but stubborn and annoying.

Right in the middle of my thoughts and concentration (I also rubbed my finger bloody in the kitchen) ...
13:56:56 Our sweetheart H44 with his 'Gjak' :innocent:

Plaster on the finger and on.
14: 02: 38/39
14:03:23 H44 participates!
His 'gjak' is insanely graceful and calming. When I first met H44, I never expected it!
What a strong character.

Look at the clock ...
14:15 no departure noises yet

However, I did not hear his arrival either. H21 is a little different.

I've been wondering for a long time whether the partner doesn't actually have to be close when, for example, H44 breathes his 'gjak'.
Does he just do it or can it be assumed that H21 is also close by here, for example? Otherwise it doesn't make sense, does it? Partners would not hear it from a distance. Or? :puzzled:

14:26:29 - 31, 39 - 49, 55 - 57

14:27:11 (H44?)
14:27:45, '49, '55 the 'gjak' in their own way ❤

14:28:14, 15-21, 30-43

14: 29: 18/19, '37, '43, '44 (H44?) 14:29:53 - 30:01

14: 30: 28/29, 36-39, 46-31:04

14:31:18, '28 (H44?), 53 - 32:00

14: 32: 37/38

I'm sorry, but I don't want to cut out a sound.
