Estonian Tawny Owl Webcam 2018

Post by Bea »

Webcam at Estonian Tawny Owls (Strix aluco) Klaara & Klaus

We are watching this webcam now for the 8th season and we are still calling the resident couples Klaara & Klaus, although we can be rather sure that they are not the same couple from the first season (2009). Tawny Owls are not ringed and so it is difficult to distinguish how many different Tawny Owls we saw breeding here meanwhile.

Introduction on LK main page: http://www.looduskalender.ee/n/en/node/2250

Location of the nestbox is not far from human settlements, so it is normal to hear sounds from passing cars, tractors, lawn mower and even human voices.

We can expect between 2 and 6 eggs, incubation time is 28 to 30 days.

Observations of most previous years showed us, that up to 6 eggs were laid, but that only 2 or 3 owlets will grow up and become branchlings.
Also this year we can´t expect that all hatched owlets will grow up. The owlets which are too small and weak to fight for their share of food and won´t survive this hard competition, will be fed to surviving owlets by the female Tawny Owl.
It is a food source that can´t be wasted, Tawny Owls behaviour can not be measured with our human ethic understanding.
Camera won´t be switched off, things will be shown as they happen in this real wildlife.

Please be aware of this, especially when you watch this cam with your children!

Hello everybody to the season 2018!

Owls are still quiet here in Estonia because we have severe cold, for example today´s night - 21 C. But first warm days will wake the owls up fast. Weather forecast for the region with Klaara & Klaus breeding area shows the arrival of early spring around 10th of March.

So let´s hope that a well-disposed Klaara will accept his invitation to this nestbox soon :shake:
