HU, Gemenc
18 ha forest area, usually 35 pairs, this year 28 nesting pairs:
(GT) However, the cool, rainy weather in May did not favor hatching chicks, and several nestlings were ruined by then, and in a number of nests, due to long-term food shortages, additional chicks, or even complete nestlings, were destroyed.
result: only 14 young BS from 16 nests
....
we saw it live! the weather, food shortages..it is really sad

What a bad result
The bad thing is that the weather will not change to normal anymore.

the "good" to me is: situation on our nest was not exceptionally - not (only) the failure of the new pair

It is rather bad than good. 14 young storks instead of 48 ones(three from each of 16 nests). Only 4 of those 14 survive their first migration. So 4 instead of 12 next year.

they are years where are worse and another are better - I hope for better year also on Gemenc-Keselyűs nest like in Poland: Puszta-Notecka nest (3), Dab-nest (3) or in Italy (3), Spain (3) etc. :shake:

I think that "a failure of a new couple" would be bad but the problems with weather and the lack of food are much worse.

Is it known anything about the nest in Hungary where last year all the three storklets were killed by a WTE? Did the parents change the place for nesting?

:hi: Solo,

I understand and agree. It was a tragic season that was really hard to watch. The female did her very best.
Have you heard any news about the missing male ?

Solo, for me, these are guesses. There is no evidence that it was a young couple.
It may well be that further visits to this nest have taken place (by Humans) . The male was not Tobias. Sara and Tobias have endured the closeness of the people. The new maybe not. But it may also be that the male was killed or seriously injured.
I do not think he gave up his brood without reason

The bad result coincides with the result of Maris. Also in Latvia it was a miserable year, as far as he could tell.

:hi: Liz,
I wrote "new pair" - not "young couple". New on this nest (and who knows - also new for each other).
I think too, that the male was killed or seriously injured or something bad happened to him  .
I am sorry to hear that also in Latvia it was a miserable year
I hope for better upcoming season :shake:

Next year it will be clear what happened to the male. If he is alive, he will come up in that nest. After that terrible story when both parents left two their unfledged storklets die from hunger I wouldn't be surprised if he just flew away, because at that age one parent would be able to raise two chicks alone. But it looks like this nest is not too happy for its inhabitants: 2013 and 2015 seasons were also very bad for it, 2017 and 2018 were only a bit better. Only in 2016 everything was good.

that was very late brood on that nest - feeding ended on Aug. 20 (nothing), next 5 days only 1x (younger perished on Aug.27, elder on Sept. 2 - info from Mr.K.B., Hungarian BS expert) ... a completely different situation situation as on "our" nest

- male was without ring or another identification mark (= nothing will be clear)
- they isn't evidence if parents left their chicks (male probably perished, female fed her chicks)

what do you consider as a happy nest? which of those we are observing is a happy nest?

GEMENC-Keselyűs
2011: 5 chicks raised here
2012: ?
stream:
2013: 4 eggs, 4 storklets, but on May 25 female very probably perished and the storklets died (rainy cold days and the youngest was only 5 day old on May 25)
new female
2014: 3 eggs, 3 young storklets fledged
2015: 4 eggs, 4 hatched, 2 eliminated, 1 perished (on nest), 1 fledged
2016: 4 eggs, 3 hatched, 3 fledged
2017: 4 eggs, 4 hatched, 1 eliminated, 3 fledged
2018: 4 eggs, 4 hatched, 1 perished (on nest), 3 fledged

No, I meant the case a few years ago when the parents started their migration while the storklets were left in the nest. The storklets from this year died from the storm and not from hunger.

what do you consider as a happy nest? which of those we are observing is a happy nest?
For example, this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k7i_hSUG5ag All the chicks fledged and well fed.
GEMENC-Keselyűs
2011: 5 chicks raised here
2012: ?
stream:
2013: 4 eggs, 4 storklets, but on May 25 female very probably perished and the storklets died (rainy cold days and the youngest was only 5 day old on May 25)

2017: 4 eggs, 4 hatched, 1 eliminated, 3 fledged
2018: 4 eggs, 4 hatched, 1 perished (on nest), 3 fledged
In 2018 3 of 4 chicks fledged, but later one of the fledged chicks got bad injury and died, so only 2 of the 4 survived. In 2017 one of the chicks injured its leg and limped.

on this nest Gemenc-Keselyűs no (that was another nest = Gemenc-Pörböly without public stream)
asteria wrote: July 25th, 2019, 7:29 pm...The storklets from this year died from the storm and not from hunger....
where you read about the reason? i haven't that info

2018: probably, but without evidence, 2017: on Aug.22 chick was seen already O.K.

Puszcza Notecka: only this year stream and enough late started - June 12 (we haven't infos about eggs, hatchling, brood reduction, ... and nothing about previous years)
GEMENC-Keselyűs: very successfully nest

I didn't read about the reason but 1) the storklets were fed every day and 2) it was after the storm that they were found dead. So they might have died because of lightning.

male is missed from June 6
female: first 2x feeding (not enough), June 16 and 17 only 1x

edit:
05. VI. 5x
06. VI. 08:17 + 13:29:18
07. VI. 07:02:31 + 16:26:00
08. VI. 10:46:55 + 15:26:31
09.VI. 09:07:50 + 13:30

that is only your personal, subjective opinion - we haven't official info!
I am not sure about the reason (very probably they starved plus thirst - very hot days  )
