Estonian WTE Webcam 2014

Post by Jo UK »

On November 6, the new camera was installed at the nest of Linda and Sulev, at Saunja, in the Silma Nature Reserve.
This is our sixth season to observe these beautuful birds who are now our old friends.

We hope to follow them through another nesting season in 2014.

Now i see that 'our' nest is front page news: http://www.looduskalender.ee/

it says that the camera was taken from the black storks' nest, dried and then brought and installed here by Urmas, Renno and three Finnish visitors, Matts Finnlund, Ismo Nuuja and Jorma Mäenpää
(or Jarmo; in the text and in the figure caption the name is different ).
the Finns are planning to set up a nest camera in the Quarken area.

Renno, Matts, Ismo ja Jorma and the big batteries needed in the forest (on the ground on the left).

the camera installed above the nest ( hopefully high enough :whistling: )

Links

The direct stream from the nest can be followed on the Looduskalender pages
in Estonian:
http://www.looduskalender.ee/en/node/18356

in English: http://www.looduskalender.ee/en/node/18356
auf Deutsch: http://www.looduskalender.ee/de/node/18365

or directly on a web player here: http://pontu.eenet.ee/player/saunja.html

or for VLC-users here: rtsp://193.40.133.138:80/live/saunja

On the first link, the Looduskalender link you will also find an introduction to the sixth nesting season of the white-tailed sea eagle (WTE, Haliaeetus albicilla) camera written by Urmas Sellis (Kotkaklubi).

All White-Tailed Eagle Camera News in Looduskalender can be found here in order of latest to oldest:

Pontu camera
As in earlier years in connection with the live camera there is also a camera which takes still pictures of the nest once every minute for the archives. This camera is called Pontu camera. A similar camera is operational at each EENET- bird's nest camera. The still pictures can be found in addresses which are of the following form:
*ttp://pontu.eenet.ee/saunja/2013-04-08/2013-04-08-08-36.jpg

Here the first letter h has been replaced with *, so that the address can be seen as whole. In the address above 'saunja' refers to the WTE nest. For other nests this part should be changed to for example with 'kure' for the black storks Tiina and Tiit's nest camera, or 'tooni' for the other black stork's nest which has in recent years been inhabited by lesser spotted eagles Tuuli and Remo. The date appears in the address twice (in the above example 2013-04-08 means April 8th 2013) and the time -08-36 means 36 minutes past 8 am. Editing the date and time will open the desired Pontu picture. Note that the date needs to be changed twice. If the picture is not found even for a seemingly valid address the time may be too early or too late: pictures are taken and stored only in the light time of the day.

One of the forum members, debianuser developped a tool to view pictures in a practical way. It was originally posted in the Osprey topic but the tool can be easily modified to view Pontu pictures from other cameras as well.
Here's a quote of debianuser's signature to give the link to this tool:
"Bird and other animals webcam snapshots and videos from pontu.eenet.ee with easy date selector to quickly switch between snapshots
http://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3654 ... pontu.html "

Thank you debianuser!

If someone wishes to download the Pontu pictures in large quantities to one's own computer and needs help in doing that in a practical way one may ask for help from ame (or Felis Silvestris).

Both cameras, the live and the Pontu camera switch off in darkness in order to save energy. Both work, however, in very low light levels so in the last and first pictures of the day almost nothing can be seen.

Have fun whatching again veryone.
Now back to the Africam near Joburg (as residents say overthere) to watch the fast growing and ultimately handsome Verreaux's Eagle chicklet.
Have a nice day you'll

If you are interested - we have a topic for it here in LK forum: viewtopic.php?f=14&t=611 to get us over the "chick-less" time!

today on Nov 10th the camera started at 7:26 and went to sleep at 16:54. based on the Pontu pictures it seems that it was especially windy in the morning but it got somewhat calmer in the afternoon, meaning that the pine twigs on the side of the came did not shake very much. the wind was loud all day though. in the early part of the day it seemed to be sunny as well at least part of the time.
one Pontu picture from the morning at 9:59: ... it seems that i can't upload other pictures now that i'm bulk-uploading Pontu-pictures... i'll add an example of the hard wind later tomorrow. good night!
