she's doing it right! A smart Princess They don't incubate from the first egg. Unless it's frost and snow.
Karl II is a little overzealous!
EDIT: last year hatched three on the same day, the fourth chick a day later. That was well done by Kati. She only incubated when all the eggs had been laid. Asynchronous hatching is not necessary for storks.

Hello everyone,
She actually has laid an egg! Oh dear!
For the first time egg laying could be observed in daylight.
Many thanks to all for the reports and beautiful pictures! I will now read up carefully on all the events of the day.

Yes, Michi. I was also very surprised. they don't lay in the daylight. It is too dangerous for them. But I could see on Polish cameras that the male takes care of the female when she lays an egg. So that's normal what Karl did.

Kiser and Biker, thanks for the pics!
Crissy, thank you for the video!
21:14:43 Karl II flies in.
21:15:23 Working on the second egg.
21:17 Karl II flies away. This time he will search for food, I think.
21:19 The little female incubates.

I will post a pic of it. It wasn't bad, I believe
She stepped twice on the egg. But she didn't put her full weight on it...
21:17:42 With her left foot.
21:17:54 With her right foot.
Be careful, little Princess!

Hello, Liz
In fact, the 3 first chicks hatched May 16th, and the 4th chick hatched two days later, May 18th.
It is a little mistake on page 1 - 2019
I remember when I saw this a long time ago I thought 'I have to tell Jo', but then I forgot.

After I've scrolled back the stream and saw the egg laying process from the moment on when the female laid down, I'm deeply impressed. Those were very special moments. It was so beautiful.
On the other hand ... are you all sure if Karl II's care was really welcome in these moments? Perhaps the female would have preferred not to be preened all the time? Karl II was simply unstoppable.
At the moment I'm just happy for Karl II that he now has what he always wanted.
But when I see that the female was gone for almost 9 hours after laying the egg, it gives me an idea of what might come. I'm very much afraid that this will not be a good breeding season.
However, I keep all my fingers crossed that I am wrong, and that we might see two storklets grow up.
A big thank you, Swenja, Anne, Kiser, Biker and everyone, for your comments and opinions, reports and wonderful pictures of this day. Many thanks, Crissy, for the video! I'm happy that we have these precious scenes preserved on a video and can watch it again.

Pictures of the enchanting moments, I've taken from the back scrolled stream.
09:57 Karl II's beautiful plumage in the sunshine, preening his young lady.
09:58 He really looked under the tail of the female, it took about 7 seconds. The female even lifted her tail feathers. :)
10:05 Look how attentively Karl II looks at her! Are you well, my dear?

10:07 Very intensive preening
10:10:17 Since some minutes the female has fluffed up her head- and neck feathers. Apart from that there were no visible signs that she was laying an egg. I only saw a single twitch at 10:10:47. Perhaps this was the moment when the egg was laid.
10:13:33 The first look at her very first egg. Karl II made some soft sounds when he saw it; one can hear it in the video. They were similar to the ones he makes immediately after mating (if I'm right). I guess it's just joy. :)

First, Karl II has rolled the new egg. Then they both went around it in a circle, looking at it ... probably amazed ... pleased ... I've never seen such pictures.
10:13:38 In front it's the female.

10:13:56 Here it's Karl II in front, on the right side.
10:13:57 Still looking at the precious egg.
All the best for you, dear storks!

Their red beaks and legs, their elegant black and white suit, and all the red trees around them, It looked like a piece of art made by a great painter.
To me there was magic there
I felt exactly the same. And I found her to be very beautiful and elegant as she stretched her neck during that time she was laying the egg. Her overall coloring in that sunlight has a lot of brown in it, but it looks black the rest of the time.
Yes, a wondrous scene.
