.
The chicks look a bit overloaded now.
Kaia won't have to offer any food for the time being, I think.

The stork puts things in order in the nest. He knows how to knock out-to shake the dust out of the moss efficiently. Dust flies in all directions. The children are worried. The older one tapped Dad on the head a couple of times...Junior's hoarse voice is clearly audible... But nothing can distract the pope from a serious matter.

did Kaia not feed the children from 13.17.50 to 15.22.11? Or did I miss something? Maybe that's why she came back so quickly at 15.48.47? Did she realize mistake?

I think Kaia has realized that she doesn't have to feed if Karl II is always hunting. She will likely have had a bite to eat when she was gone. She came back after feeding and now she's waiting for Karl II. Karl II will feed again and Kaia will fly away until tomorrow.

Kaia is smart. She doesn't want the chicks to be alone for so long when danger is around the nest.

It is a clever division of labour.
Kaia looks after the children and guards them, and Karl II goes fishing.

As long as Karl II can handle it...
Of course, it is an enormous amount of work to feed 3 chicks (almost) on his own...

This way the chicks are safer and Kaia can keep more than enough food for herself.

I love that Kaia hasn't learned to leave the kids alone yet...

Tatiana, I didn't notice the feeding.

I thought the same. It is interesting, who could this "dangerous creature" be? :puzzled:
Kaia came back so soon...
Yesterday the chicks were longer without parents at home than today.

Karl II doesn't worry so much, he's a "man" 8-)
He leaves the children home alone and goes fishing.

Amazing how big these kids are today! :headroll:

If the camera stays offline for a long time, I will have a look on OrniTrack tonight.
This morning, the data session failed for some unknown reason, but maybe we'll get lucky tonight.

The chicks are very lucky to have Karl II as their father, I think. If they had to survive on what Kaia is able to catch, it would not look so good.
And I really don't believe that Kaia is kind of lazy, or clumsy. She’s a survivor, thus she’s certainly very skilled!
I am just convinced that Karl II is exceptionally smart, hardworking and talented.

@ Anne7, Tatiana60 and Heloise big thanks for the great pictures, video and reports. :2thumbsup:

No, Kaia is not lazy. She saw the danger today and decided to stay with the chicks. If it was the hawk, she'll know the hawk will come again.
Karl II can take over the food procurement for the chicks for a certain period of time. Tomorrow is a new day, but today Kaia didn't want to leave the chicks.

Swenja!
I thank you too!
I really hope that it wasn´t a goshawk... :faint:
There have been so many bad stories...

But Kaia is really very brave although we know how shy and timid she can be.
She did not fly away! She protected her chicks and looked very dangerous!

I just looked at the photos I took.
Kaia, 14:08:01. The danger is almost over. The chicks are quiet and motionless.

And naughty kids, 15:20:14

The chicks look like some furry balls, embroidered with fine black thread 8-)

21:53 :bash:

P.S. good at least that froze such a beautiful picture on which we see sleeping Kaia and her chicks, not the frightened and frightening Kaia.

We need Liz01 who would write to a technician!

:hi:

OrniTrack information

Karl II wasn't home yet at 22:38 (latest known location for today) :slap:
He was on that wider creek at 16.5 km from the nest.

I will write some more info in about 10 minutes.

Here you are:

Today, in the afternoon, Karl II flew a long distance again.
OrniTrack says he flew a total of 115 km today.

He flew a very wide 'circle segment' of almost 30 km 'around' the nest.
Between approximately 15:50 and 19:05 he was flying!
Then, from 19:08 to 22:38, we see him at that slightly wider brook at about 16.5 km from the nest. He has been there yesterday, and also today in the early morning, after he left the nest at 06:35.
He is there searching for food in what I think is a boggy area on the banks of that brook.

Earlier today, he was also foraging along a brooklet close to the nest (distance ranging from about 1 km to 1.5 km), between approximately 10:25 and 11:49.

And also between approximately 13:20 and 15:20 he was on that same brooklet.

Thank you, Anne7!

(That means they are also fishing late at night (I remember when Urmas wrote that he tried to catch Karl II late at night)).

Could that mean that Kaia has been in the nest all the time and has not eaten? Or are the chicks in the nest alone?
The camera froze at 18:22:44...

Maybe. If Kaia stayed on the nest...
Maybe she stayed, maybe she left. Unfortunately, it is impossible to know.

Since it is now light for a long time, light enough to fly, it could be that Karl II will still come home. Or is already home.
It is about a 20-minute flight.

Good night, Heloise!
Sleep well, everyone!

We won't find out.
Whenever things get exciting, the server doesn't work. :bash:
I hope Kaia is with the chicks tonight.

Thank you very much @Anne7
Unbelievable that Karl II flew such a large radius today! It's probably about foraging for food. With the amount of food that Karl II brings to the nest, he needs more places to find food.

Good night again :offtobed:
