Re: Black Stork Nest in Karula, 2021
Today, №2 made us very happy...
he got up on his feet, cleaned himself, stood a lot without shouting while others were sleeping...
he grows, catches up with №1.
Such beautiful photos were! Thank you all, all, all.

Hallo zusammen,
Their necks are so full that they can hardly sit upright. They tip over again and again and are full and tired. But Karl still wants to clean.
No. 3 is not interested in Karl's grooming mania at all or he is too far away and is lucky..

Soon the chicks have to stay alone in the nest so that Kaia and Karl II can meet everyone's nutritional needs. Every day longer that a parent stork can stay in the nest is precious.
Many thanks to everyone for everything!

What we see today in OrniTrack.
Today Karl II went looking for food at 5 different locations.
- One very close to the nest, at about 800 metres, by a brooklet.
- Another at about 2.4 km, also along a brook.
- One at about 7.2 km from the nest, along another brook.
- Another one 9.4 km from the nest, right next to a pond.
- And the furthest one today was at 16 km from the nest, along a slightly wider watercourse.
Karl II was at the nest during the night and was replaced by Kaia at 07:23.
He arrived back at the nest at:
- 10:31 (at 12:55 he was gone again)
- 13:16 (at 14:35 he was gone again)
- 16:50 (at 20:35 he was gone again)
- 22:15
The timings in OrniTrack are not accurate to the minute, because we only see the location at fixed intervals (5 minutes interval at the moment).
Sleep well, everyone
Thank you all!

Many thanks for the times and distances to search for food. @Anne7
Kaia seems to be looking for more frogs and worms, i.e. food in the mud or wetland. She doesn't mostly offer fish, like Karl II.
Perhaps that's why she might have problems finding more food: drought. When was the last time it rained heavily? There has hardly been any rain since the chicks hatched. The sun was always shining.

Karl II was gone for 1 hour and forty minutes, if I counted correctly. (out at 20:35 - back home at 22:15)
I see in OrniTrack that he flew to the pond, about 9.4 km from the nest. So within that time he covered almost 20 km and managed to fill his crop with fish.
On the way to the pond he flew at 46 km/h.
On the way back he flew at 40 km/h.
Between 20:50 and 22:00 he was fishing in the pond. (times in OrniTrack are approximate)

Yes, Swenja, maybe it is getting a bit dry now and the mud in the wet areas is perhaps drying up.
It has rained very little in the past few weeks. Almost nothing.
But rain is expected at the weekend. Actually, this is ideal. The chicks are now 2 weeks old, and it is not that bad anymore if they get (a bit) wet. They can regulate their own body temperature in the meantime.
Thank you very much for the weather forecast, Heloise!

Yes, I see her teeth!
I think the chick will need dental braces.

how many fish brought Karl II on 10.6. at 15:30?
he spat out 2 times such lumps of fish
@Kaia, these ditches he visited that day (listed in detail by Anne7) are very rich in fish.
I can not count how many snatched the chicks.
Karl II ate at least 8 himself.
not included in the clip (half speed, zoomed in) - additionally he collected a few smaller ones.
