Black Stork Nest 2, Jan and Janika, 2021

Post by juta »

The Black Stork nest 2 is situated in Jõgeva County in Estonia. We have known this breeding territory since the late 1990s when black storks successfully nested here for many years. After 2004, the nest site remained empty. The male bird Tooni, who nested here at the time, moved to the adjacent territory. The nest where Tooni moved, was the first Estonian black stork nest camera in 2005-2010. Black storks came back to the nest seen currently on the camera only a year or two ago. It is an old artificial nest. We built a new platform in the early spring of 2021. Considering the critical situation of the black stork in Estonia, it is a small miracle that the storks came back here.

The male arrived at least one or two days ago, because he worked a lot at the nest repairing.

11:53:59 stork is back - singing/whistling/calling
Image

prof. P.Z. wrote to similar situation on PL nest:
He saw another stork - he called for a long time and tilted his head from side to side.
Sometimes it also speaks up after landing without another stork. But then he calls for a shorter time and does not keep looking up.

Nice looking nest,
and a nice looking black stork!

Should a name be invented for this black stork too?

:hi: Treia,
we will see :headroll: (we do not yet have any information in relation to the nest or this stork, which could be inspiring when choosing a name)
