Black Stork Nest in Karula - 2018

Post by Jo UK »

Welcome to the third year of webcam viewing at this Black Stork nest in Karula National Park.

We hope to see another season of nest activity with Karl and Kati, not yet home from migration. We can watch Karl's journey from South Sudan on the Birdmap http://birdmap.5dvision.ee/EN/
As Kati does not have a backpack tracker, her present location is unknown.

Introduction from last year's topic -

This Black Stork nest is located in Karula National Park which is probably the best breeding area for Black Stork in Estonia nowadays. It was found in February 2016 by Eagle Club nest searching camp.

This introduction on the Looduskalender main page is really worth reading! Photographs of the old and new nests and good information about the history and present set-up of the nest and camera system.

An interesting series of photographs about the installation of this year's black stork nest.

Urmas sent two photographs of the new nest and he explained the construction of it.

"that time we were too much hurry to finish by the darkness and I was up on tree. Ain forgot to take photos, only near finish (it was quite dark already) took couple of them (enclosed). There is not visible the new nest, only the supporting pole. Artificial nest is behind the remains of old nest (about half of it was fallen down and other half was probably still on tree because it was frozen). So I decided to build new nest just a side of old one, so it was possible to use another big branch as support for the nest in left side, right side is supported by construction partly visible on image made by Ain. I forgot also to ask Ain to send photo camera up, to me. Sorry for that! Understand now well, that people (also me) would like to see the situation there before and after. The nest material is taken from the old nest part on tree, but spruce branches specially picked from the fallen tree and the base built of those. Hope Karl will not be upset of not really right building material used...

In right lower corner there is a part of the big branch of old nest visible. There will storks probably stand on (if they accept my reconstruction of the nest).

Horizon ( and vertical trees in background) are not exact, probably angle moved a bit with fixing the screws, but I did not check it anymore after fixing screws. Microphone is situated on next bigger branch up the nest about 1,8m (like it was last year)."

So it seems that Ain and Urmas worked under difficult conditions. They had to hurry before daylight failed. The old nest material was frozen.
Very grateful thanks to both of you.

?
I think, there's a bit patience needed. I'm sure, Urmas & Co. are first of all happy that the new nest is builded and the cam runs. The other amenities will probably come if there is time for.

It's the link from last year! Many viewers are hoping that we have the new stream on youtube soon. In my channel are daily requests for Karl and Kati. In the previous year, many fell in love with this couple.
At the moment I'm glad that Karl can be seen on the birdmap. There is time enough, to put the stream on youtube. They are still far away.

See you

And good that they are far because it's -7 at the moment at Karula and it'll be like that for one more week. :slap:
Thank you Urmas and all others involved working in such winter conditions. Hope nobody caught cold.

Hello to everyone :hi:

What a great job these kind people have done for the lovely blackstork family, thank you so much! And thank you Jo, for the information, and new topic. I see it`s a cold weather in Karula too, like in many places in Europe. It has been a very hard winter for me, in many ways. Here, it`s still -15˚ in the mornings, and a half meter of snow. But to see this camera put me in a spring mood, thank you

10:40 - Someone landed above the nest.

Edit: It was a little bird, I got a little glimpse of it.

No, this is a video, no livestream, just as the link in the first post here …
Of course I can wait but the post looks as if there were an actual livestream. I only wanted to know

Greetings, Martin
