yarko wrote:Found something about hybridisation of LSEs and GSEs:

/.../ Hybridisation between spotted eagles has a particular importance since both species are threatened and a regular interspecific hybridisation is unusual in raptors./.../

/.../ Hybridisation occurs regularly in spotted eagles and a large proportion of the Greater Spotted Eagles in the sympatry area are interbreeding. Hence, the hybridisation has an obviously negative impact on the Greater Spotted Eagle even in the case of limited fertility of hybrids and a lack of introgression.

The possible reasons for the hybridisation include rarity of the Greater Spotted Eagle and competition for mates and territories in the Lesser Spotted Eagle. Hybridisation is strongly asymmetrical, and since larger females are more successful breeders, the Lesser Spotted Eagle males could prefer to mate with the Greater Spotted Eagle females.

Despite their similar behaviour and regular hybridisation, spotted eagles should be treated as a separate species. According to the superspecies concept, the semispecies status seems to be most appropriate./.../

Umm...should it be posted in Behaviour forum instead? :puzzled:
yarko, you are finding such interesting information!

I thought that we could use the "Behavior" thread to discuss potentially upsetting things like cainism etc, but ... it would be very good to have all these articles together in one place. Maybe you could also copy it there?

Eha left at 19.24
Returned 19.27.

Now it is food time. Eha is feeding Spot with the frog that has been on the nest for a time. It must be washed quite clean now!

Eha left, Spot awake and looking. After a couple of minutes Eha already back.
Tomorrow at about 9.39 pm eet SPOT will be exactly 14 days old!!
Some of those days, between 3/6 and 7/6 were really turbulent!
Spot seems to be an alert LSE.

It was thunderstorms here in Southern Finland too for many hours. We had to put el off. I wish Eha will be tomorrow allright again, beautiful and lively . Spot was a beauty there hiding dry under the belly of Eha during the whole rainy time I guess. But Eha, poor of her.. like a wet stone.. or a gnome.
:innocent:

Sorry if there are here some almost same pics as some others earlier  But I think Eha looks beautiful even though she was wet and reminds me of the gnomes in fairy tails.

Two pictures after rain (dont know about 21-22)..captured/finished by my son :D

I promised to share the pictures here, only terms were- "dont play too much in Photoshop and edit so we can see eagles"... cropping, enlarging are ok, but that's it...

My son's (10 years old) comments:
second pic is bad, cause bird-family isnt in the middle, but he made it so, cause he liked green twig so much... actually he wanted to crop only this twig (but terms are terms) :rotf:

Lili, your son has done so well, with those pictures. In both pictures, there is something almost surreal about Spot's eye. Did he enlarge it or alter it somehow? No, sorry, I just read your post again.

What big eyes, you have Spot
I know Spot's eyes are a prominent feature in his "face", but that just drew my attention to it!

Very well done. Lili's son

Jo, Spot eyes are really big (I think he didnt enlarged it, but I will ask tomorrow...just in case- you know boys :rotf: )

We had guests (including one 5 years old girl) and I will add some her comments...discussion with her was really funny. Unfortunately I dont have skills to translate all and even if I would have, it doesnt sound so like originally (child-mouth...like we say in Estonian)
And she noticed Spots eyes too :innocent:

- she is sure, there are mother and daughter in the nest....:D And if I asked- WHY... she dont know, just she is sure Spot is not son :puzzled:
-Spot has big eyes cause her head is so tiny, if she grows then she looks like Eha

And of course there were more opinions....but in one thing I am sure- at home the little lady will say to Mama "I want to watch eagles-cam" :2thumbsup:
