Poll: Choose LSE Eaglet's Name.

Posted: July 2nd, 2013, 10:59 pm
by Jo UK
This is a poll to select a name for our LSE eaglet at Eha and Koit's nest.
Members can vote once for one name only
If you change your choice of name, you cannot alter the poll form, but you could write to Admin or Mod and we can take account of your new choice when the poll ends.

These names, some shortened, are all familiar in Estonia and can be gender-neutral, or can be changed if nature tells us so.
Names research has been done by ame -

I made some research about Estonian names using Wiktionary (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Category: ... iven_names) and the Estonian namelist (which i can't remember where I found it) as sources. (the pronounciation suggestions are from the "list")
here are the ones I came up with:

Male names:
Aar, Aare = “treasure” (cognate with Finnish Aarre = “treasure”).
Ain variant of Hendrik (“Henry”).

Female names:
Aino (borrowed from Finnish from Kalevala; derived from ainoa = “the only one”; in Finnish also Aina =”always; both female names. Compare with Ain above.)
Eda {AY-dah}, . 1) Estonian short form < German Hedwig „battle-ready‟; 2) < German Edel „noble.‟ Traditionally the form is derived from Hedwig
Heli {HAY-lee}, . 1) Estonian „sound (of music)‟; 2) form of Helena.

Two names which mix female/male in Estonian/Finnish:
Ilo {EE-lo}, . Old Estonian „mirth, joy.‟ (in Finnish ilo = “joy” from which a female name Finnish Ilona = “as a joy”)
Kai {KAHEE}, . Estonian form of Katharina. (In Finnish Kai is a male’s name)

LOL - I wanted to vote for "battle ready"
Maybe we shall have to do it this way, by ordinary post.
I will ask webmaster if he has a fix for it.

I'm not sure, but I think that the pronunciation of Heli is almost just like the first four letters of word "helicopter".

Also, I am a bit doubtful about the pronunciation given fro Aydah (Eda)
It just doesn't "feel" Estonian

Jo, one question:

These names are no longer ok?

Kaido first hatched,
Kenno second hatched,
Kaari third hatched

I would prefere these...?

boga, at the moment no-one is 'allowed' to vote as the polling progman does not work. there is something wrong with the program and people are looking to fix it. as Jo wrote above: when the problem is fixed the polling will go on for 3 days.

Jo, i think that the first letter E in the name Eda should be pronounced like e in words nest and pen, and the last a as in words car and far but shorter than in these words.

in the name Ilo the vovel I is pronounced as vowel e in most English words like in king and ring. the vowel o is pronounced like in words rock and roll. 8-) both vowels are short.

i'm not quite convinced about the pronunciation advice of Kai either. {KAHEE} does not sound right at all. it should be a as in car and far followed with i pronounced as e in words need and feel but again shorter than in these words. they are also pronounced closely together. together they sound like the vowel i alone in the English word high.
- these two vowels a and i form a gliding vowel or a diphthong (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diphthong) so they form a doublevowel.

in the names Ain and Aino the first vowels form a similar diphthong, too. the combination ai is pronound like in English words mine, kind or even like.

the name Heli is pronounced exactly like in helicopter.
a helicopter is another thing making a lot of sound! - i think there once was a title in the LK frontpage called "Nädala loodusheli" = "The nature-sound of the week". usually it was some bird's song i think. (nädal = week, loodus = nature)

Thank you, starling  how embarrassing.... :banghead:

So I would prefere Kai. I thought about, wether it will fix to cainism, this I don´t wont. But also it is
coherent for me, the german translation is: Kai is one about king arturs panel knigths and also is namend the spear carrier. This changed the energy in positiv form, and I also can imagine for female...

ame, thanks for correcting the pronunciation guide.

Webmaster may not be able to fix this poll problem so why don't we simply post here, our choices.

After three days, we can go through all the posts, then work out which name had the most votes.
If that is the only work-around, let's do it.

No problem even-wolves-dream.
I also vote for Kai. Because it was the first suggestion (of aita). And it would be good for both sexes (Estonian female & Finnish male name).

To me Kai would sound like "my", "high" or "die". Just starts with letter K.

The pronunciation corrections made by ame are right. I also found this site http://mylanguages.org/estonian_alphabet.php, might be helpful to some.

I vote for: Ain. It is very easy to change it to Aino, when we find out that he is a she
