2020.08.11 - Obviously the laying of the first egg took too long for Dad and he fell asleep right at the important moment!!!!

2020.08.11 - Dad finally wakes up and get to see the first egg.

2020.08.11 - Dad brings in a fish for Mum. He just covers the egg, not actually keeping it warm - waiting for the other eggs to arrive before they start the incubation.

Thank you Bea and Seira for this new topic.
Did I get that right that Calypso (last year's chick) is still around?
And is this the same male as last year? I am asking because he was sick for some long weeks last season.

2020.08.14 - Woo Hoo - We now have two eggs.

I am not familiar with this nest, maybe other members who have watched for a long time can answer your question. The official Facebook is also very diligent to update the news.
Regarding Calypso, it is indeed still nearby, but it has not returned to the nest.

Port_Lincoln Osprey :
This is a nest on a barge in Port Lincoln South Australia. It is at the entrance to the Lincoln Cove Marina. The Ospreys have been nesting here for over 8 years. We moved the nest from another barge to this current barge as it is higher out of the water and more stable. We then installed a security camera and solar panels so that we can watch the nest 24/7. This season three eggs were laid but the second egg broke within an hour and Mum ate it. The first and third egg hatched on the 18th and 20th September 2019. The eldest chick has been named Calypso and the youngest is Star. They were named after Calypso Star Charters, a shark cage diving company here in Port Lincoln that helps sponsor this nest. Our Osprey don't migrate, and we don't have problems with predators but in the past, we have had lots of siblicide and yet there was always plenty of fish being delivered.
HISTORY
2019 - Three eggs laid - One broke within an hour - Two hatched and going well
2019.10.29 – Both chicks were banded by Ian Falkenberg with stainless steel ABBBS, Australian Bird & Bat Banding Scheme bands on their right legs and Calypso has a blue band and Star has a yellow band on their left legs for easy identification.
Calypso weighed 1.5kg and Star 1.35kg. The nest is 1.25m by 1.5m.

So happy Hope all goes well
I will check out facebook regularly to see whether they mention which male is the sire.
Addition: I asked in their chat - they said it is the same male as last year.

2020.10.05 - 15, 14 & 11 days old - Wish Mum would just sit on her squabbling chicks a little earlier - but I do love how Taps doesn't back down. He even gets hold of Solly by the crop and doesn't let go.

2020.10.05 - 15,14 & 11 days old - It was so wet yesterday Mum kept the 3 chicks under her very protective feathers to keep them warm and dry - who wouldn't love a day in a warm bed on a very wet and miserable day. Today Dad has brought in a big fish so they can all have plenty to eat. - Oops - I forgot to add the video

I watch this nest with discomfort. Two days ago I was hoping for a chance for Taps. This little Osprey kid is so defiant ... Taps keeps getting up. This little bundle of energy doesn't want to die. Taps is fighting.
Today ... after yesterday I was still confident ... he has no chance. It hurts to see I took screenshots but I won't post them. This slow death in spite of a valiant struggle is almost unbearable.
The situation reminds me a bit of Hickory and Mossy. Mossy often looked so hopeless ... but he made it. Taps is just a shadow of its sibling and the difference is getting bigger every day.
If you read you can see that kainismus is not an isolated case in this nest. Nearly every year. Why? I have never seen or read it like this in any nest. Even if there was a lack of food.

I do have a problem when people use human terms to describe the situation there. So, I would not use Polly's words because it just does not resonate right with me.
We humans just simply do not know why these things happen. Siblicide seems to be common in this nest. This is nature, although difficult to understand. Maybe this is sort of population control with ospreys who do not migrate. But then, I cannot say that this is true. Anyway, whether we understand it or not, it is happening.
We shall just watch it, accept it and not judge, denunciate or bash the female or male.
It makes me incredibly sorry to read in the chat nasty things about the siblings - this goes so far that some want to kill the older siblings and bash the female for not defending the small chick or the male for not bringing enough. I think that this behaviour is more awful than the events in the nest.
We humans will never ever understand what goes on in this realm. This is the only thing I know for sure.
Still, watching this nest is also unbearable for me. I just take a quick look and hope that Taps will have a quick death and be free.

Rita, what problem do you have with my words? I have not judged anything. No siblings, none of the parents !!!! I only described the situation as it is. You give it back! Just worded differently. Please stop your allegations for good. It sucks.

Polly: That's what I mean:
- this is simply human description. You do not know whether this reflects reality. What you write is subjective, it is your interpretation. For me this lack of objectiveness sucks. And a 'kid' is a young goat. In the nest are chicks. This little Osprey kid is so defiant ... Taps keeps getting up. This little bundle of energy doesn't want to die. Taps is fighting

Rita, it doesn't matter whether we call this bundle of misery a child or a chick.
The situation remains just as cruel !!
Technical terms may make you proud, but they don't make the situation any better.
What do you want to achieve with your know-it-all ?????
This forum is full of our observations. Full of observations from us laypeople!
Where do you see or read a single ornithologist who joins?
Who shares observations?
With us? Where?
So why the smart sugar?
