...I'm not follow this nest, but what is happened there, the first chick is most likely starved and some days before at your pics were still two. Is the second one also starved? Strange...

@Birdfriend: poor little one died because of food shortage.

Montana Osprey Cams
1 hr ·

Hello all,
Chick #2 has not survived the long stretch with no food. He was last fed on Sunday morning, June 24 and the late morning fish today was too late. He had no strength to beg. Chick #1 seems strong. As mentioned before, ospreys feed the oldest and strongest chick first. This allows for survival of at least one chick in tough years, such as the one experienced this season. Remember, we are dealing with the 2nd biggest flood on record of the Clark Fork River!

To enforce this point, I want to share with you some anecdotal data we have been collecting weekly on turbidity this year. Data is collected a few 100 feet down river from the nest across the river. Turbidity is measured in NTU units -Nephelometric Turbidity Units. In short, we measure how much light goes across a water sample. The higher level of particles in the water, the more reflection and the more light. The higher the number, the more turbid the water is.

Standard for healthy Western Montana rivers for aquatic life is less than 10 NTU. We expect higher turbidity during Spring runoff. During March and April this year, we were right around the 10 NTU mark. Throughout May, we had over 100 NTU (!!) and in June, it has been fluctuating between 25 - 60 NTU.

This has to be making fishing more difficult even for the most experienced fishing bird. Let's hope for water to clear up and easier fishing conditions.
Best, Dalit

Thank you for your information. When I remember right, last year was also a disaster there.

@ Birdfriend:

Milford, CT - on June 21, 2018, 09:01:18 PM the struggeling chick 2 which didn't get enough morsels was in the front row and raised his head first as fish was there, he got fed, little one '# 3 behind didn't raise. You may agree in my zoom pic that perished bob 2 who got the feed was a bit larger as his sibbling. Nevertheless dead cause remains unknown...

chick #3 is well so far!

Belwood Lake

Finally, Luther brought a fish for the kids and Sera! Both get fair shares.

Kids are sated, Sera could also feed herself, then she left the nest and Luther get the rest from this fish. He stayed there, how usual, all the time.

Belwood Lake

Oh my gosh, Luther brought a gigantic fish for his family. This poor fish was still alive, he jumped in the nest at the chicks, the chicks were terrified. :slap: One went into submissive posture, because he/she meant, the sib was bonking to him. But it was the big fish with his strong movements.

Hog Island, Maine

We are pleased to announce that the HI Osprey are now named Summer, River, and Spring!
"Spring" suggested by Solera from Austria for the book "Silent Spring" by Rachel Carson
"River" suggested by Chillin because what would ospreys be without water!
"Summer" suggested by Ginger Iglesias for John Muir's "My First Summer in the Sierras"

Crooked Lake

Mom makes a great job as sunbrella.

Yesterday the little one had often no chance to get food, he/she is smart, has learned to wait for his turn. I have read he /she had finally a good meal in the evening.
Today until now it looks better for him/her. In the early morning Dad came with an half eaten fish, the elder sibs were not interested. Good for the little one! He/she could it its alone. The next delivery got only the two bigs, but later the chick #3 was eaten well from the third fish of today.

I'm glad to see a feeding without any bonking! :loveshower:

Edit: These chicks are very talk-active.
