Farewell to Rhett and Scarlett from Landings Osprey nest. Their nest was cut down today to make way for the new nest that Landings/Skidaway hopes will attract Great-horned Owls, instead. So when Rhett and Scarlett come back from migration, they will no longer have a nest, nor the tree it was in.

Will they provide another nesting facility nearby for Rhett and Scarlett? If they have other options I am sure they will adapt. And they will know.

Does anyone know what was/is the matter with the male there? I looked up as much as I could
in facebook but since I am not signed up there my options are limited. Anyway it looks as if
the issue has been solved and the male is back to normal again.

Sadly, no, they have not provided a new nest for Rhett and Scarlett. Instead, they have created a new nest that is the type that will attract Great-horned Owls or Bald Eagles. Many cam watchers want to watch the Owls instead and are being a bit smart (nasty) about it and rooting for the Owls to nest there. The nest is in an area under large branches from a tree for the young to branch before fledging. Ospreys will not nest in that type of situation because there is nowhere for them to spread their wings. So, it looks like it is goodbye for Rhett and Scarlett. When they return from migration, they will find their nest gone and possibly GHOs or Eagles in the one right next to where theirs was.

If they do return, they will either build a new nest, together, far from the camera or they may even split up and find new mates and go their separate ways. As we know, Ospreys are bonded to their nests and their nest is now gone, forever. Very, very sad what they did, there, removing that nest.

As far as the male Osprey at Port Lincoln, no one knows what was wrong and why he stopped coming around with food but everything seems to be ok, again. The adults, there, look so fragile compared to the European and American Ospreys so it's hard to judge if he is just thin and the mother, too, or if they are just fine. Keeping fingers crossed!

The older chick (blue ringed) shows still some aggressions against the younger one. The younger sibling has to wait until the older is sated, goes in a submissive modus til she finally gets her share. It seems to me that the female go for fishing too, most likely Dad brings still to less fish.
