There's been a big improvement in the picture quality of the Dutch WTE webcam. Unfortunately the camera position hasn't changed obviously Maybe next year they can improve the camera position.

Yup they are very active now, an egg is expected very soon. Today they were together for 3 hours continually building on the nest, and sharing some prey. In your picture on the right is the female, on the left the male.

After the sad and depressing news from the Hungarian WTE nest lately, I'm happy to be able to tell some positive news: that there is at least one egg in the Dutch WTE nest.

Gisteren merkte een aantal oplettende volgers van de zeearenden het op; het gedrag van de vogels was veranderd. Vrijwilliger Lammert wilde het met eigen ogen zien en ging vanmorgen gelijk bij het nest kijken. Hij is overtuigd: de zeearenden zijn begonnen met broeden!

Hoeveel eieren er zijn, kan hij niet zien. Hoe weet Lammert dan dat er eieren zijn? Je ziet het aan het gedrag, legt hij uit. De zogenaamde ‘nestwissel’. De zeearenden verlieten het nest tot nu toe regelmatig. Ze waren uren op pad. Nu er eieren zijn, blijft er altijd één vlakbij of op het nest. Met name het vrouwtje zal de eerste weken niet van het nest wijken. Het mannetje zorgt dan voor voedsel. Over een paar weken zal het vrouwtje ook weer af en toe jagen.

Het duurt 35 tot 40 dagen, totdat de eieren uitkomen. Tot de jongen hun snavel boven de rand van het nest uitsteken, blijft het spannend hoeveel het er zijn. Maar dat heeft ook zijn charme, aldus Lammert. We wachten het af!

Yesterday certain observant followers noticed it; the bahaviour of the birds had changed. Volunteer Lammert wanted to see it with his own eyes and went to the nest this morning. He is convinced: the white tailed eagles have begun to breed!

How many eggs there are, he can't see. How does Lammert know there are eggs? You see it in their behaviour, he explains. The socalled 'nest change'. Until now the eagles left the nest regularly. They were away for hours. Now that there are eggs, there's always one close to or on the nest. Especially the female won't veer off the nest the coming weeks. The male will take care of the food supply. In a few weeks also the female will start hunting again every now and then.

It will take 35-40 days before the eggs hatch. Until the eaglets will show their beaks above the edge of the nest it will be thrilling to see how many there will be. But also that has it's fascination, says Lammert. So we wait and see!

Today the male flew in and away few times. He was lying along the female (it seems he wanted to encourage her to change ). Finally she got up and flew away.
When she was back I noticed she still limped. Her leg is not fully recovered.

it's interesting how the Danish couple stay together in the nest so often. maybe it is because of the foot injury: male comes in 'normally' for his nest duty but the female will not leave as she 'normally' would. i haven't seen that kind of behaviour in any other nest (but i haven't watched many couples.)

the incubation time of WTEs is rather precisely 38 days so i think hatching is expected on May 7th in the Dutch nest. i think that the spread in the incubation times in various sources in literature is due to the difficulty of seeing when the egg(s) is/are laid, and also the difficulty of seeing when the chick(s) is/are hatched.
