Darn, so many photos have disappeared from the forum. Shaun Nichols writes in The Register about Photobucket: “Not surprisingly, the new rules went over with users about as well as a rattlesnake in a pinata...” https://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/06/3 ... party_pgs/

An advantage of picr is that you can cut directly here on the recommended size for forums

yes biker, resizing to suitable size during upload is a great advantage. upload doesn't seem to have that option. one would have to resize pictures before uploading.

yeah, i registered already in February last year.
how do you keep track of your pictures?
with this, Stichwörter (keywords?)? is it enough? :puzzled:
Image

i would like to organize my pictures in albums like Kotkas2017 containing sub-albums for each month, then each month containing an album for each day.
picr resizes automatically (see picture above) but in picload one can create album structure but no resizing. now i don't know which is more important for me... :faint:
resizing separately is awful lot of work but looking for certain pictures from a pile of pictures with random picture codes is impossible. :dunno:
(in the bucket i have or had over 170 000 pictures from the last 7 years)

edit (much later, on March 3 2022):
Vērotāja made a tutorial video of how to upload pictures to picr.de and then how to post an image in the forum.

thank you Vērotāja!

Thanks for the alternative suggestions here.

@ame: I´m sorry for you and all the other dedicated forum members who have lost access to such a huge amount of photo material! For me the damage is (relatively) limited but still really annoying.

If you click on „Upload starten“ at PICR you confirm that you own each picture and that all pictures are free from rights of third parties. LK screenshots/photos, videos and sounds are protected by copyright – I don´t know whether this would be contrary to PICR´s terms of use. As far as I can see, organising is at this time seemingly possible via keywords (255 characters maximum). Maybe it works if you name your photos “Kotkas2017” + name of the month + numeration.

the Bucket is probably working sporadically now that a lot of people are trying to download their pictures and deleting their album. there's a mass run from the site.

i've been thinking about photohosts and their promise of free accounts. actually nothing is free. someone pays for this fun. for free accounts the payer must be advertisers or those people who run these photohosts. i suppose that 3rd party hosting (the traffic from users' accounts to fora and such) is the thing that costs most. it is also a cost that is always running. photo storage much be a small cost compared to this. that's why the Bucket now started to charge so shamelessly much for free 3rd party hosting.

it's also impossible that any photohost could function "forever". maybe for 10 or 20 years, or even a human lifetime, but not forever. that's simply not possible.

so i'm afraid that no photohost is really safe. the smaller photohosts like picr and Mejuba which are/were run by a few (ideological) people will also change. they'll have to start ask for fees (hopefully reasonable) and begin to give space for advertisements. sooner or later the people running them will get tired (it must be a huge amount of work). then our pictures will be gone again.

for the time being i really don't know which might be better: to join a really big photohost (like Flick but it's under Yahoo) or a small one (like picr). Google has a picture service, too , but it's so rigid and non-functional.
i think i'll try picr next.

Bucket in web news:
https://petapixel.com/2017/07/01/photob ... edded-web/
https://www.ghacks.net/2017/06/30/photo ... ed-images/
and here is some reasoning in the same outlines as i wrote above: there's no free photohosting, someone pays it.

Even though I am not a heavy user all my photo's have gone from the fora as well.
I have managed to download a few albums. But for every album you need to 'prove' you're not a robot. The endless pictures of cars and traffic signs you have to click before they have proof enough! Very annoying.
I don't think I will have the time to replace them nor do I remember which picture goes where exactly.

But it is really sad that so many informative and also some very beautiful and spectacular pictures from many people have gone from all these fora. All that knowledge down the drain, time waisted. But at least the videos are still there (for now).

I shall try picr, let's hope it is an improvement. The bucket was often stuck or slow.

i made two screen recordings from the Bucket web pages to 'eternalize' the writings on the barn wall.
if the pages scroll too quickly stop the video to get more time to read.
the new terms published on June 20:

http://photobucket.com/terms
more about the new terms:
http://blog.photobucket.com/please-revi ... otobucket/

the blog article published on July 6. in this article they explain their new 3rd party hosting plan.

soundtracks are from Juras-Erglis camera. 8-)

i think that the core of the message is in the beginning of this blog article.
...
John Corpus, CEO of Photobucket, said that historically the company “relied heavily on advertising revenue but that major industry-wide changes in the advertising space have greatly impacted Photobucket, including the rise of ad blockers and the Company’s explosion of 3rd party hosting that generates zero revenue.”

“This model is no longer sustainable,” Corpus added.

Corpus noted that seventy-five percent of Photobucket’s costs originate from non-paying users leveraging 3rd party hosting. The majority of the industry has either eliminated 3rd party hosting or imposed variable pricing based on consumption. To address the market, Photobucket has added unlimited hosting to its Plus 500 Subscription plan at a competitive fixed price.
http://blog.photobucket.com/photobucket ... ting-plan/

the sentence which i bolded and italized says what i suspected: showing our pictures in fora is the most costly thing. someone has to pay for it, the Bucket is not a charity organization. if advertisers don't pay for it anymore then it'll be the users. :slap:

thanks Lubaska!
i had a quick look there. they seem to have the possibility to resize pictures at uploading them. that is good, because it saves a lot of work.

is it possible to create an album-tree structure there? (like year with months as sub-albums and days in a month as sub-sub-albums) i'd like to have that, too.

It s very simple. Based on your question I have signed up and uploaded 3 pictures... there is only one way how to create any structure inside: by "Create a new gallery" and give it a name, e.g. "July 2017". Then inside a gallery you can sort your pics by "Filename" or by "uploading time".

I cant see more features there. But I ve never needed any so I had not account till today :)

thank you Liz and Lubaska!

i already checked picload earlier and saw that they had the possibility to create album structure. however they don't have automatic picture resizing. :slap: i suggested them that they could make that development. their reply sounded like they will not have it in near future.

so one service has one thing, the other has the other. if some service will have both then i'll be very happy.

i have uploaded my pictures to picr.de so far. they have resizing and there one can give a Stichwort (keyword?) to pictures. i hope that will allow me to organize pictures in some manner...

After Photobucket is no longer a choice for sharing pictures in a forum, one looks around to find solutions. I have been using Picasa web albums for quite some time before Google retired it in favour to its Google Photos. Thankfully the links to posted images were not broken and the albums are in "archives".
They can be kind of moved over to Google Photos though, and I have tried it out, and found that the links seem to still work.
For linking pictures from Google Photos I also found a "how to do".

If you want to link it to the forum:

- go to the picture you want to link and right click on it
- copy "image address" (a very long one)
- here in the forum place it between the Image

Note - pictures can be sorted into albums, but one apparently can contain only 500! If not sorted to albums, Google sorts them according to date taken.
