Only for one time (in my life) we have experienced here in Southern Finland -40. It was at the end of 1987! Then there was here - 43 C! It felt not as bad as I had imagined, there was no wind and we had warm clothes.
If I had not known how many degrees there was, I would perhaps guessed, well, 20-25!

Of course it was hell for small animals like birds, and for bigger animals too.

Breathing caused white steam like clouds, and if we had thrown boiling water in the air, part of the water would have frozen immediately to thin flying powder, and the other part the water turned to sharp ice crystals, pearls!

I think have made a test some years back in time. Maybe I'll make a new test this winter.
edit: But this is a fun test: Bubbles freezing at -26°

The sweet Lesser Spotted Woodpecker!
Let's hope that there are two of them.
I have a dream..

Again the same Roe deer. The other one is checked if there are apples under the birch. Hubby put some apples for one night, and in the morning the pot was empty!

Last night we had -28C ...brrrrrrrrr...

I want to know now many Lesser Woodpeckers there are. Just wishing that there is one female and one male. at least.

These photos are of one the same bird:

Today, the 24th Jan, a red squirrel was watching inside for a long time:

Some visitors from the last two weeks:

8th January

The lesser spotted woodpecker, and I am almost 100% sure that this little, a rare beauty is not a loner! I have seen it/them almost every other day, so they probably are not just passing by. Lets hope the best!

Hi, some times something :puzzled: happens..
spatz, I think you could remove the unlucky post. Push the x button to the right on your post (if it still can be deleted). Then you can write your post again.

There is perhaps a time limit, and the unlucky post can't be deleted any more. But it's alright! Let it be!

The cold days are over. It's +2C!

The squirrel seems paralyzed, a great video:)
Also very nice to see the birds at your feeder, Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, Black woodpecker and blackbirds. It's a hard winter for them, with the cold and snow. Good to hear that the harsh cold is over, at least for now.
Thank you for the update from Squirrel Hill
