Bad news from Makov  :
libor, makov
22.1. 2021 (06:56:27)
Due to the proven occurrence of H5N8 bird flu in two dead swans in the village of Zlivice, which is adjacent to our village, we must lock all birds in aviaries for PREVENTIVE reasons. The pond will also be drained. The virus is not transmissible to humans, but is highly contagious to all species of birds.

Mr. Libor wrote today in Guest Book:
Unfortunately, we found the merganser dead yesterday without any signs of injury, he probably died of age.

I enjoyed watching him

Very possible. It is not known exactly how old Miki was, he lived in Makov since at least 2012 and was already adult at that time. Mergansers in nature live about 13-15 years. But last two years he suffered from limping and sometimes could hardly walk.

Hello everyone :hi:

Rescue Station Makov, CZ

Guest book
libor, makov - středa 24. únor, 2021
Honzík je teď pod sítí, kde bývají černí čápi, brzy ho pustíme. Maruška má poraněnou nohu a zůstane ve velké voliéře.

Mr. Libor Šejna - Honzík is now under a net where black storks live, we will release him soon. Maruška has an injured leg and will remain in a large aviary.

Honzík - the male white stork, Maruška - the female white stork, both name are commonly used as the diminutive form of Jan/John and Maria/Mary

By the way, yesterday I looked through Makov guestbook and found out that Honzik also had a sprain in 2011 but got recovered. Marushka's leg was also better when she was busy with storklets but later the things changed to worse. :puzzled:

Vejirka and B&B were seen near the birdfeeder. Others must be in the aviaries or near one of the ponds.

b/ Majda - the piglets (young wild boar)
c/ Mikuláš (Nicholas) - the cat

btw. Miki had enough long and good life in the rescue station - I liked observing this merganser

Honzik doesn't recognize Elishka as a mate and chases her away. He needs his beloved Marushka

Already two eggs in Sokolka.

A few days ago a grebe was released in Makov pond. She had problems with leg and couldn't fly. Unfortunately it died yesterday.
