Prairie-chicken wiped out in Canada
From millions of birds to none in about 100 years
http://www.cbc.ca/canada/manitoba/story ... pated.html

I thought this was interesting because Canada has much less population density than we do in the US and still they have problems. AND the story may ultimately have a happy ending because we still have some so eventually we may be able to export them back to Canada.

An article in our local newspaper L'Alsace today published an article announcing the beginning of the 'Save-the Toads and Frogs' in their dangerous journey across the roads in the way of their migration to the ponds and pools for reproduction.

The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) is attempting to introduce ospreys to the South of England, at Poole Bay. There was a TV news item this morning - RSPB have put two dummy ospreys on a nest and hope to attract any passing osprey to investigatte the nesting possibilites of that area. There is a good local food supply and a friendly environment.
There was even someone flicking white paint around the nest to make it look like the droppings of chicks in the nest!

http://www.rspb.org.uk/news/details.asp?id=tcm:9-249988

If they are successful, then there will be an ospreys just an hour's drive from my home!

Reminds me I just saw a picture of an Osprey that caught a ride on a boat because it was tired from its migration flight -- I think it is now in care (it might have recovered and been released)

I was about to decide I had imagined this story when I found the link

Seems like there should be something about the terrible oil leak in the gulf.

Lots of pictures
http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2010/0 ... n_the.html

I guess it is still too early -- even after all this time -- to know how terrible this mess will be, but for sure many animals are suffering.

Another series of pictures
http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2010/0 ... hores.html

I am afraid it is now clear this is just a huge horrible mess.

Here is a story of a wildlife criminal, now in prison.

A man tried to export peregrine falcon eggs from UK. Thankfully, he was caught.

I hope the eggs survived ? .. nasty man.! I read in the Loch of the Lowes thread earlier that they had a 24/7 watch on a falcon's nest.
Now we know why. :slap:

There was a lady here (on the Oregon coast) who got in big trouble for feeding the bears. There were a whole bunch living in her area. I think one of them put a paw through someone else's kitchen window. Feeding bears is not really a very good idea.

In this case it seems like the officials could copter them out into the wilderness, if they begin to pose any problem.

Alice it seems that those bears are, already out in the hills :puzzled:
From the black bear thread http://www.bear.org/website/ the Black Bears do very well in the forests feeding on ant-eggs,wildberries of all sorts etc;
They are vegetarian. Why ever feed them dog-food ? :puzzled:

I think the problem is when they are fed they learn to associate people with food, so they hang out nearer and nearer to people -- on the porch, in the garage etc. and then if they get too demanding (breaking windows and the like) for food they need to be taken out FAR away from people, so they go back to their natural food. Around Kamloops I am sure they could get their own food but maybe they have been trained to wait for deliveries. (I wonder if Helen knows more as this is not that far from Vancouver.)

Transporting them out far into the wilderness is commonly done with grizzly bears in parks -- they tend to ship the bear out once, if it returns to garbage cans it is likely shot.

Jo's story is better but this one has a picture of the babies.

I am not sure 30 months in prison is serious enough, given that this was his 3rd conviction. It sounds like he has made a career of stealing and selling eggs.

And a picture from the Guardian a week in wildlife

I just heard a news report on this -- there are dozens of bears and they think that they have been fed for years, so at least some of these bears may never have looked for their own food.
