106.Who killed the White-tailed Eagle? Northern Germany, September 2013/July 2014

The bird was found dead, but without visible injuries, under a power line near the village of Muxall last autumn. The post-mortem examination at the Leibnitz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Reasearch (IZW) provided no answers. Now a taxidermist discovered that a rubber bullet stuck in the bird´s head - obviously the eagle was shot with this special ammunition, which can´t be be seen on x-rays. According to the article, several birds were found dead in the same area in 2009, all of them poisoned by the insecticide parathion (E-605).

108.Cormorant crucified at Lake Chiemsee. Germany, August 2014

This act of barbarism was discovered last week. According to the article, the dead bird has not been removed yet. Sabine Pröls, chairwomen of the local Bavarian Bird Protection League (LVB), says two nesting attempts of White-tailed Eagles failed in the same area – probably somebody intentionally scared the rare birds away.

116.Zero Prevalence of Influenza A Virus in Two Raptor Species by Standard Screening

“If highly pathogenic avian influenza strikes rare birds of prey, this may have crucial impact on the predator species itself, but also on the food web in which it interacts. Here we present the first large-scale screening of raptors that regularly consume birds belonging to the natural reservoir of influenza A viruses. Influenza A virus prevalence was studied in two rare raptors, the white-tailed sea eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) and the peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus). (…) Neither high- nor low-pathogenic influenza infections were found in our sample, but this does not rule out that the former may have major impact on rare raptors and their food webs.”

117.An investigation into the detection of latent marks on the feathers and eggs of birds of prey. UK, January 2015

“There are numerous enhancement techniques (physical and chemical) which have been developed for the successful visualisation of latent fingermarks. Nonetheless, problems arise when latent fingermarks require enhancement on difficult surfaces such as human skin, food stuffs, fabric and animals. The ability to develop latent fingermarks on the surface of bird of prey feathers and that of their eggs was investigated.”
