128.White-tailed Eagle shot and mutilated near the island of Møn. Denmark, 2015

The dead animal was found underneath a stack of wood planks on the island of Lindholm - head and feet had been cut off. According to the DOF article, x-rays revealed a fractured wing bone, but the eagle did not die from this gunshot injury. What makes the case even more peculiar is that Lindholm is not open to the public. The small, state-owned island is home to a virological research institution, a branch of the National Veterinary Institute.

An adult male bird and two 11 week old young eagles were found dead in and below a nest near the village of St. Michaelisdonn.

According to the SHZ article, eight breeding pairs have been reported in Dithmarschen (a district of Schleswig-Holstein, located between the Eider and Elbe rivers) this year. Only four pairs started a breeding attempt, three of them without success due to human disturbance. The dead birds were the last remaining White-tailed Eagle family in this area, where 15 eagles have disappeared since 2005.
