According to the article, the wetlands in this area are habitats of several rare and endangered species like red kite and White-tailed Eagle.
The district was unable to overcome the opposition of local activists.

According to the article, the eagles came back to this area (often nicknamed “Cuxland”) 10 years ago.
It´s possible to observe them from birdwatching towers in the polders Glies near Sellstedt or Bramel.

According to the article, the ringed bird was unable to fly when it was found in the Kainuu region. White-tailed Eagles are rare visitors in this part of Finland.

According to the article, National Park spokeswoman Erika Dorn says three or four White-tailed Eagles live in this area. About ten eagles join them during the winter time.

The bird was seriously injured and emaciated when it was found in mid-November. It is a female, ringed in 2008. Probably the eagle will be released next spring.
