i've seen today a tracking map where the routes and the locations of birds with transmitter could be seen.
with an accuracy of 200 ft. (depends on google maps).
couldn't this be a danger, because the nests may be localized by hunters?
edit: ok, i meant the migration map...

The map is not in real time so mostly it shows where they have been.

I saw just emotional reactions, not insulting ones, also it's very hard to show your emotions/feelings/opinion in a language that's not your own language, I tried to say respectfull but clearly what I think about this 'tagging stuff' and my opinion is still the same, I just hope Piret is okay.

My opinion stays the same as well. I just can’t look at the birds with antenna’s on their backs. Honestly, I lose my breath. And I am not angry as somebody said here. I feel sad for birds that have to do that. We need information about them – totally agree. I do. I understand that information helps them and us. I understand that everyone in this forum loves these birds and the nature in general. That’s why I think we people all over the world should put more effort in looking for some ways to do this in less frightened for birds (in this case) ways. We have to force companies that making such stuff to move forward and improve the old transmitters or offer something more advanced something new. It is the 21th century anyway. It has been put so much money in developing new software globally (I am working in a software developing company), computers, phones, all the security systems etc. Transmitter appearance has to be changed as well.

So, information is needed and very important for the future; time to look for better ways then! Piret has a transmitter without an antenna. I hope it is better. For me looks better anyway as it is small and hope it won't affect on mating. Hope it won’t put her in any danger more if she would be without. But now I am curious if it‘s the best what is in the market? Developers as well as global organizations should work together in order such people as Urmas, Janis or somebody else in UK or the US, Africa or EU would have them in their pockets; every bird can have this transmitter if it fits on bird’s ring and doesn’t do any harm.

But until I see those antennas on the birds I say no. It is not fair for this particular bird who lives today, fights for food, rise children and tries to survive. There are limits for everything. There must be anyway.

Thanks for all your posts with information about what happened during the days in the long period of incubation and not many people were around. These were valuable and appriciated - at least of me. Also thanks for your posts later on.

Crane who flew to Turkey brings surprising new information for Christmas
Now it has been proved that young cranes can manage their first trip to the south on their own.
The young cranes who were equipped with satellite transmitters on their backs in July and August, to allow their migration to be monitored, have made the best possible Christmas gift to our ornithologists by providing a great number of new facts that certainly were unexpected to the bird investigators.

Of the three crane youngsters – Juula, Ahja and Rasina – the last-named has offered the scientists the most excitement. To start with Rasina made the crane specialists raise surprised eyebrows when it turned out that this young crane set course on Turkey quite alone; she has been moving around there since October.

Ornithologist Alar Leito from the University of Life Sciences in Tartu, who keeps a watchful eye on the movements of our cranes notes that until now it has been considered as a fact that young cranes make their first autumn migration to the south together with their parents, and in a flock with other cranes. „The flocks of cranes usually don’t break up until just before the spring migration. But now it turns out that it may also be otherwise and the actual migraton model for for cranes has become much more complicated.”, Alvar Leito explained. The fact that Rasina made the migration journey on her own has been confirmed by bird-watchers in Ukraine as well as in Turkey who have travelled to observe and photograph the lonely bird in her whereabouts

Unexpected wintering location
In addition to the fact that thanks to Rasina it was confirmed for the first time that cranes can fly to the south successfully on their own already in their first year, much excitement has been created among experts by the individual and instinctive choice of migration path. „The migration pathways of cranes have always run straight across the Black Sea, from the Crimea to Turkey, and from there on to the south: thus across central and eastern Turkey. Rasina however arrived at the western edge of Istanbul from the Odessa area in the Ukraine, moving along the western shore of the Black Sea; this path has never been observed before”, Alvar Leito told us. „All current data prove that a young crane can migrate on its own just by following its inner instinct, because Rasina flew in a straight line from Odessa to near Istanbul, that is, to the south.”

To top it all comes the fact that Rasina has remained in Turkey. Until now none of our Estonian or the Finnish cranes have been known to winter in Turkey, they have only passed through there.

If Rasina is going to spend Christmas in the Bilecki county near Istanbul, then Juula and Ahja – coming from Aivar Leito’s own home area, Elistvere – have made a preliminary stop in Croatia. Aivar Leito believes that if the weather there too becomes wintry they will set course towards Tunisia, going across the Mediterranean and the „boot” of Italy

I just came to say Hello :-) I'm new here, totally fell in love with these babies (Madis and Piret too, of course!). I can read english well, but unfortunately my writing is not so good that I can tell you all the things i want to ;-( Still I wanted to register and say THANK YOU ALL for very good information, not only the stories but especially photos and videos!! I've been waiting for so many days for our Uno's first flight, and because i'm on vacation and sleeping very late I missed that :-( but i'm so happy i could read the full story with pictures and videos here. Thank you, once again! Oh, that was spectacular!

At 12.30 something happened. I could hear sound like a fall, and still can hear crying from far away.
I hope all is ok. Can anybody do something to help them?
Even Nori looks like he’s worry.

Even crying is weaker and weaker, I can still hear it.
Uno had visited the nest at 12.30 EST, and eaten fish which was shared with Nori, but Elo is still missing.
I’m worry ...

Did someone hear something like that at 12.30 ? hmmm..
Thinking where is ELO? Hope he is not in trouble.

I heard that too at the time.

Elo was then briefly on the nest and flew off to the cam support. When Elo landed on the cam support, it sounded like she missed (there was another bird already there) and that she made what in aviation terms is called a "Touch-and-go landing". She then flew off again.
But as said in my previous post: 10 minutes ago there were two birds on the cam support: Piret (confirmed now) and the other sounded like Elo, although I'm not 100% sure about that.

Here a screencap I took at 12:29, just after Elo visited the nest first and then made this failed landing attempt on the cam support. You can see that Nori watches what's going on and follows Elo's movements:

14:30 - Someone lands on the cam support, and there's a lot of 'talking' between Nori in the nest and two others on the cam support. But who are the two others? I think I recognised Piret's calls, but I'm not 100% sure. The other bird calling sounds like Elo.

The male is also importend (we want to keep the species maintained right?) so you have to care about the male too.
And we don't know if or how Piret is bothered or not by this unvoluntary 'backpack', so let's not jump to conclusions.

Kukelke, here you were right about Piret! My god, how can you recognize her voice? Still can't believe

I've watched this nest so much with sound turned on, and have tried to learn their individual distinctive calls by looking and listening at them and then check whose beak is open. Their voices are almost as individual as human voices. It's difficult to decribe exactly what it is, but some sound shrill, others have lower voices, there's something with the "pitch", the tone, the vibration too.

I'm also very glad that Piret is in good shape.
