What surprised me this time were these bended, carefully put claws - just like Irma does when she approaches/sits down on the egg.

In either case, it was very interesting to observe these episodes, how both sisters were playing with the cone yesterday and how Kaja was still occupied with the it today.
Yes, the whole behaviour towards this cone bore analogy to Irma's treatment with her eggs.

I just love this family and to see Nesting stuff there already. Does anyone know when they will start their migration? and how far they go. :loveshower: :gathering:

15:30 There was a very strong gust of wind that blow Heli with the huge branch, brought by Irma, out of the nest :slap:

16:45 Kaja swallowed her fish tail and Ivo landed with a nice fish for Jaak 8-)
16:47 Kaja flew off
17:02 Jaak left his big fish tail and flew off, Heli was on the nest but didn't notice it
17:05 But Irma noticed the fish, she landed, took it and flew to the dead tree with it, Heli started calling for the fish
17:22 Heli jumped to the cam stand, is calling there, 17:25 jumped to the nest, 17:29 back to the cam stand
17:30 Jaak flew from the dead tree, Heli jumped from the cam stand
17:35 Jaak flew away, 17:44 Heli jumped to the cam stand, is calling, jumped back to the nest and flew away at 17:45
17:47 Jaak landed, 17:48 Heli followed
18:05 They both are dozing side by side :D

Maxi4Paws: Irma will start in August still - in a bit more than one week she could be gone already. She tends to go early and return late.
Then the osprets go. Last the males.

Usually they spend the winter in the area of River Congo in Central Africa. Some do not go that far. There was one (Vadim, who did not make it back) who spent the winters at Lake Turkana. They go to the same spot every year.

You may follow the birdmap (which is not up-to-date yet but it will be in time). There should be two (male) ospreys who carry transmitters.

Maxie,

Irma will start soon. At the end of this week or next week. Then the others follow – by and by. Ivo will be the last one.
If I remember right they go to North Africa (Nigeria, Sudan...). This is about 5000-6000 km (ca. 3500 miles) from Estonia.

First of all Irma will start migration within two weeks. Then chicks individually one by one, when they are ready for it. The last migrator will be Ivo, he supplies food for all the chicks as long as they stay on the territory. The father usually leaves in early days of September.

Ilmar, the very first male on this nest with camera had a satellite transmitter on his back year 2013 and he was tracked during his winter in Angola, near the border to Namibia, in the Southern part of Africa. Some other Estonian ospreys have been tracked to more Northern parts of Africa, for instance Côte d'Ivoire on the Western North coast. For all of them, it is a question of thousands of kilometers (9289 kms for Ilmar from/to Angola) every spring and every autumn. I will remember that the ospreys' spring migration takes about one month .

So far I only get active tracking autumn migration of an Estonian black stork chick, but on this map you can follow migrations of all Estonian birds with satellite transmitter during the years you choose http://birdmap.5dvision.ee/index.php?lang=en

Someone is on the dead tree. Rain and storm comes up, Heli (calling for food) and Jaak visit the nest, but the strong wind blows them out, Heli first, then Jaak also has to jump off. I am so glad they already learned to fly.

 Maxie4Paws, just 3 days ago I made an overview about migration dates.
Hmmm, maybe it's worth to put this somewhere on the first pages, to the facts, so that it is easier to find it.
Sunshine wrote: August 10th, 2018, 11:02 am For Irma:
in 2013 - she was last sighted on 23 August
in 2014 - 21 August
in 2015 - 19 August
in 2016 - 24 August
in 2017 - 20 August

So Irma might presumably start the migration any time from 19 to 24 August.

Chicks:
in 2013 Kaido last seen on 8 September, Kenno 12 September
in 2014 Elar and Aino were last seen on 12 September
in 2015 Yolanda last seen on 5 September, Niina on 15 September, Thor on 19 September
in 2016 Ivar last sen on 4 September
in 2017 Daimar was last seen on the nest on 27 August and Daisi on 11 September

So the young osprets might presumably migrate any time from ~ 27 August to 19 September.

The male:
in 2013 Ilmar was last seen on 12 September
in 2014 Ilmar was last seen on 12 September
in 2015 Joosep (J3) last seen on 18 September
in 2016 Ivo last seen on 4 September
in 2017 Ivo last seen on 11 September

So Ivo might presumably start his migration journey any time from ~ 4 to 18 September
