Estonian Osprey Nest (Marko & Miina) 2019

Post by Bea »

°°°°°°°°°°

Welcome to the eighth season on this nest!

Introduction on LK main page in English: still to come

We start into the new season with the hope, that two mature ospreys, a pretty lady and a handsome guy, will form a couple, willing to occupy this nest and breed in it.

After two years of empty nest it would be great to see a successful season again. Oberservations during the last two years were very interesting though. A lot of ospreys visited this nest, some with rings, so that they could be identified, there were even repetetive visitors. And not to talk about all the other individuals without rings!
For more details about these birds one can check the annual summaries, see the links further below in this post.

So let´s gather here again, with crossed fingers, and see what will happen in 2019!

:gathering:

- - - -

Nest is located in South Estonia, Võrumaa.
A military base is close, so it is not unusal to hear motor sounds from trucks and other vehicles, sometimes even shots.

A fish farm, as well as a river, is not far, so good hunting conditions for Ospreys.

Ospreys (Pandion haliaetus) reach body heights of 50-66 cm, and wingspans of 1,27 - 1,74 m. Females are bigger than males.

- Winglength ♂ 448 bis 495 mm ♀ 470 bis 518 mm
- Weight ♂ 1,12 bis 1,74 kg ♀ 1,21 bis 2,05 kg

Usually two or three eggs are laid and incubated 36-41 days.
Young Ospreys fledge after 50-54 days.

Welome to season 2019!

Joey was the first to discover the camera online

I will leave the post as a "bridge" to the new topic here.

I think the view has changed a bit - we can see more of the sky

There is quite a noise to hear, maybe due to the neighbourhood to a military aera, with some business going on ...

Yes, and also the view has shifted more to the right. This cut(?) branch or trunk in the lower right corner was not visible before, I think.

Anyhow, it's great to see this nest again! This is where I first started to learn about osprey, with Mai and Mati (RIP both, I guess) in 2016. And even if there's no breeding again this year (though I certainly hope there will be), the morning birdsong here is second to none among all the Baltic nestcams.
